Book Synopsis The SAGES / ERAS® Society Manual of Enhanced Recovery Programs for Gastrointestinal Surgery by : Liane S. Feldman

Download or read book The SAGES / ERAS® Society Manual of Enhanced Recovery Programs for Gastrointestinal Surgery written by Liane S. Feldman. This book was released on 2015-08-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comprehensive, up to date and practical approach to creating an ERAS program for GI surgery. The first sections review the evidence underlying individual elements of ERAS, including evidence from laparoscopic procedures when available or pointing to evidence gaps where more research is required. These are written by experts in the field, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and physiotherapists. The format is in the style of a narrative review, with narrative evidence review, and concluding with a table with “take home messages” and 3-5 key references for readers interested in more depth in each topic. Each chapter also addresses management of common complications and patient selection or exceptions. Subsequent chapters address practical concerns, including creation of a pathway team, project management and engaging administration. Experts contribute real-world examples of their pathways for a variety of procedures, including colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery, upper GI and hepatobiliary surgery, enabling the user to have a starting point for creating their own programs. The SAGES Manual of Enhanced Recovery Programs for Gastrointestinal Surgery will be of great value to fully trained surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and administrators interested in initiating an ERAS program.

Download or read book Manual of Fast Track Recovery for Colorectal Surgery written by Nader Francis. This book was released on 2012-01-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manual of Fast Track Recovery for Colorectal Surgery provides a broad overview on enhanced recovery, with expert opinions from leaders in the field regarding elements of enhanced recovery care that are generic and specific to colorectal surgery. This book covers the patient journey through such a programme, commencing with optimisation of the patient’s condition, patient education and conditioning of their expectations. Manual of Fast Track Recovery for Colorectal Surgery investigates the metabolic response to surgery, anaesthetic contributions and optimal fluid management, after surgery. It also details examples of enhanced recovery pathways and practical tips on post-operative pain control, feeding, mobilisation and criteria for discharge. Manual of Fast Track Recovery for Colorectal Surgery is a valuable reference tool for colorectal surgeons, anaesthetists, ward nurses and other members of the team involved in perioperative care: pain control specialists, physiotherapists, dietitians, specialist therapists (such as colorectal and stoma nurses), and outpatient nurses.

Book excerpt: The much-anticipated revision of the second edition of The SAGES Manual: Fundamentals of Laparoscopy, Thoracoscopy, and GI Endoscopy, has been completely restructured, reorganized, and revised. The Manual has been split into two volumes for better portability. Volume I, Basic Laparoscopy and Endoscopy covers the fundamentals and procedures performed during surgical residency. Volume I will be the first volume used by students, residents, and allied healthcare professional trainees. Material has been added to these fundamentals and procedures that will also be of interest to experienced surgeons. Volume II, Advanced Laparoscopy and Endoscopy covers more advanced procedures, generally taught during fellowship. All of the sections have been reorganized with a critical eye to the needs of the modern minimal access surgeon. Two new editors have been added. Chapters have been revised by both new authors as well as many stalwart authors from previous editions. These portable handbooks cover all of the major laparoscopic and flexible endoscopic procedures in easy-to-read format. Indications, patient preparation, operative techniques, and strategies for avoiding and managing complications are included for the complete spectrum of both “gold standard” and emerging procedures in diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and endoscopy. The scope, detail, and quality of the contributions confirm and demonstrate the SAGES commitment to surgical education. This manual is sure to find a home in the pocket, locker or briefcase of all gastrointestinal endoscopic surgeons and residents.

Book Synopsis Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Programs for Patients Undergoing Colorectal Surgery by : Nancy L. Greer

Download or read book Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Programs for Patients Undergoing Colorectal Surgery written by Nancy L. Greer. This book was released on 2017. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), also referred to as an enhanced recovery program, fast-track rehabilitation, multimodal management, or similar descriptors, is a multidisciplinary approach to perioperative care. A protocol of components related to preadmission, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care is implemented with the goal of improving patient recovery, facilitating earlier discharge from the hospital, and potentially reducing health care costs without increasing complications or hospital readmissions. The protocol components may contribute to minimizing, and/or improving the response to, physiological stress associated with surgery. Although guidelines for ERAS related to colorectal surgery exist, variation in the number and definition of protocol components contributes to difficulties in determining effectiveness. Little is known about implementation barriers and facilitators as well as components (or combinations of components) key for improved clinical outcomes. In addition, protocol compliance, when reported, may be measured by percentage of elements applied or completed without standardization across elements (timing, regimens, doses, etc). Preliminary literature searches conducted for topic refinement found several systematic reviews on enhanced recovery for colorectal surgery. However, none reported on subgroups based on surgical approach (open or laparoscopic surgery) or colorectal condition. While several noted the enhanced recovery protocol components from the included studies, the standard care protocols were not documented. None commented on barriers or facilitators to implementation of an enhanced recovery program. The defining components of an enhanced recovery program for colorectal surgery have been revised over time and new trials have been published since the search dates of the existing reviews. We provide an updated review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs) looking at comparative effectiveness and harms overall and by type of surgery, colorectal condition, and fidelity to an enhanced recovery protocol. We also review barriers and facilitators to implementation and provide a contextual discussion of compliance and outcomes.
