Book excerpt: These collected chapters and interviews explore the current issues and debates about how copyright will or should adapt to meet the practices of 21st-century creators and internet users. The book begins with an overview of copyright law basics. It is organized by parts that correspond to creative genres: Literary Works, Visual Arts, Fine Art, Music, Video Games and Virtual Worlds, Fashion, and Technology. The chapters and interviews address issues such as copyright ownership in work created by Artificial Intelligence (AI), the musical remix market, whether appropriation is ever a fair use of a copyrighted work or if it is always theft, and whether internet- based platforms should do more to deter piracy of creators’ works. Each part ends with an essay explaining the significance of one or two landmark or trendsetting cases to help the reader understand the practical implications of the law. Written to be accessible to both lay and legal audiences, this unique collection addresses contemporary legal issues that all creators need to understand and will be essential reading for artists, designers, and musicians as well as the lawyers who represent them.

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Photography, Representation and Social Justice written by Moritz Neumüller. This book was released on 2022-12-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including work by leading scholars, artists, scientists and practitioners in the field of visual culture, The Routledge Companion to Photography, Representation and Social Justice is a seminal reference source for the new roles and contexts of photography in the twenty-first century. Bringing together a diverse set of contributions from across the globe, the volume explores current debates surrounding post-colonial thinking, empowerment, identity, contemporary modes of self-representation, diversity in the arts, the automated creation and use of imagery in science and industry, vernacular imagery and social media platforms and visual mechanisms for control and manipulation in the age of surveillance capitalism and deep fakes, as well as the role of imagery in times of crisis, such as pandemics, wars and climate change. The analysis of these complex themes will be anchored in existing theoretical frameworks but also include new ways of thinking about social justice and representation and how to cope with our daily image tsunami. Individual chapters bring together a diverse set of contributions, featuring essays, interviews, conversations and case studies by artists, scientists, curators, scholars, medical doctors, astrophysicists and social activists, who all share a strong interest in how lens-based media have shaped our world in recent years. Expanding on contemporary debates within the field, the Companion is essential reading for photographers, scholars and students alike.

Book Synopsis Cultural and Creative Industries and Regional Development by : Roberto Dellisanti

Download or read book Cultural and Creative Industries and Regional Development written by Roberto Dellisanti. This book was released on 2023-05-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) as drivers of local economic development. More specifically, it builds on two novel perspectives in order to interpret the phenomenon. First, despite the general recognition that CCIs are innovative economic actors, their creative output is heterogeneous, as CCIs consist of extremely diverse industries, and the concept of innovation differs from sector to sector. Second, CCIs’ creativity is locally rooted, as the context provides innovative inputs for the development of creative ideas, binding creativity with well-established theories of the regional innovation literature. The book explores these new perspectives through a novel database on CCIs’ innovation at a fine industrial and regional scale. Building on these two ideas, the book is subdivided into three parts. In the first, a novel definition of creativity in CCIs is developed in which its heterogeneity and place-based nature are at the core. In turn, the second part addresses the phenomenon of localization choices in CCIs, highlighting their heterogeneous innovativeness and the filière which they belong to as key dimensions for the analysis. In the third part, the impact of CCIs on economic growth is explored. This book offers new evidence on the conditions under which CCIs cluster in space and stimulate development. It appeals to scholars in regional science, cultural economics and related fields, as well as policymakers and practitioners working in the cultural and creative industries.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge Handbook of Investment-Driven Intellectual Property by : Enrico Bonadio

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Investment-Driven Intellectual Property written by Enrico Bonadio. This book was released on 2023-03-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook challenges the conventional wisdom that intellectual property is the law of creativity. Traditionally, IP has been instrumental for protecting creations of the mind, with only inventors of original works enjoying exclusive rights. Related, sui generis, and quasi-IP rights, which protect monetary investments and efforts rather than originality and inventiveness, were considered exceptions to the general principles of IP. But increasingly, IP rights are being granted to safeguard corporate investments. This handbook brings together an international roster of contributors to explore this emerging trend. Why are investments the primary driver of legal protection, and often the main requirement to obtain it? Who benefits from such new forms of protection? What should the scope of these new rights be? And are they desirable in the first place? In doing so, the volume is the first to highlight and systematically critique the move from 'intellectual' to 'investment' property.
