Book Synopsis Schools as Protection? by : Bjorn H. Nordtveit

Download or read book Schools as Protection? written by Bjorn H. Nordtveit. This book was released on 2016-04-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1900 the Swedish social theorist Ellen Key launched the idea of a Century of the Child. Recent media reports, from shooting and racial violence in the US to the latest news from ISIS-dominated areas provide a darker vision: it is certainly not a time for children; it is a time during which children’s wellbeing is being the cause of worry. This book is about schools and protection of children, and proposes ways to ensure the minimum standards of safety in schools. The issue of protection is not only important in specific conflict settings, but also more and more in mainstream schools in the Western context. Therefore the book is not focusing on a specific geographic area, but analyzing various contexts of adversity, including those affected by poverty, high incidence of HIV/AIDS, as well as conflict and post conflict-affected areas. It also illustrates the effects of such contexts: • non-enrollment of children or early dropout from school; • various forms of abuse and bullying at home and school; • increased incidence of child marriage; • abusive child labor, and in some cases, the worst forms of child labor. The school emerges as an institution that could play a stronger role in protection of children and that also could provide better support in the transition from childhood to work and marriage.

Book Synopsis Protection of Children During Armed Political Conflict by : Charles W. Greenbaum

Download or read book Protection of Children During Armed Political Conflict written by Charles W. Greenbaum. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help researchers and professionals understand the possibilities for protecting children in violent political conflicts. This is the first book to be published on this important, complex and painful topic. Most other publications have concentrated on the effects of political violence on children and adults, but have little or nothing to say on prevention from the point of view of the social sciences. This book represents the beginnings of a new field of inquiry and policy. The book includes: research on the effects of exposure to political violence on children; reports by police and military experts of their experiences in protecting the public and children while keeping order; observations from people in human rights and childrens rights organizations on issues of attempting to report to and observe both sides in a conflict; and work by legal researchers on international law relating to the protection of children in political conflicts.
