Book Synopsis THE ROLE OF CONCEPTUAL STRUCTURE IN LEXICAL SEMANTICS by : Prof. Dr. Himpun Panggabean

Download or read book THE ROLE OF CONCEPTUAL STRUCTURE IN LEXICAL SEMANTICS written by Prof. Dr. Himpun Panggabean. This book was released on 2018-08-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is essentially a research report written to provide study material for students of linguistics in Indonesia at the undergraduate as well as thegraduate level, in the effort to update the linguistics theoretical paradigm in Indonesia. A more precise understanding of how language works requires insight from the field of cognitive science. An understanding of the cognitive perspective of how language works will in turn enable the creation effective technology. This book is expected to provide helpful material and to guide students into a deeper interest in learning the cognitive and computational aspects of language that have become the emphasis of modern-day linguistics.

Book Synopsis Knowledge and Language by : Eric Reuland

Download or read book Knowledge and Language written by Eric Reuland. This book was released on 1993. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. BACKGROUND This volume is one of three which emerged from the Conference on Knowledge and Language, held from May 21-May 25, 1989, at the occasion of the 37 5th anniversary of the University of Groningen. Studying the relation between knowledge and language, one may distinguish two different lines of inquiry, one focussing on language as a body of knowledge, the other on language as a vehicle of knowledge. Approaching language as a body of knowledge one faces questions concerning its structure, and the relation with other types of knowledge. One will ask, then, how language is acquired and to what extent the acquisition of language and the structure of the language faculty model relevant aspects of other cognitive capacities. If language is approached as a vehicle for knowledge, the question comes up what enables linguistic entities to represent facts about the world. To what extent does this reply on conventional aspects of mean ings? Is it possible for language, when used non-conventionally as in metaphors, to convey intersubjective knowledge? If so (and it does seem to be the case), one may wonder what makes this possible. The aim of this conference was to investigate the role of conceptual structure in cognitive processes, exploring it from the perspectives of philosophy of language, linguistics, political philosophy, psychology, liter ary theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of science. The themes of these three volumes reflect the themes of the conference.

Book Synopsis Semantic Structures by : Ray S. Jackendoff

Download or read book Semantic Structures written by Ray S. Jackendoff. This book was released on 1992-04-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semantic Structures is a large-scale study of conceptual structure and its lexical and syntactic expression in English that builds on the system of Conceptual Semantics described in Ray Jackendoff's earlier books Semantics and Cognition and Consciousness and the Computational Mind. Jackendoff summarizes the relevant arguments in his two previous books, setting out the basic parameters for the formalization of meaning, and comparing his mentalistic approach with Fodor's Language of Thought hypothesis. He then takes up the Problem of Meaning, extending the range of semantic fields encompassed by the Conceptual Semantics formalism, and the Problem of Correspondence, formalizing the relation between semantic and syntactic structure. Both of these problems must be fully addressed in order to develop a general theory of language that is concerned with syntax and semantics and their points of connection. Few books on lexical semantics present such a comprehensive analysis of such a wide range of phenomena from a unified perspective. Besides discussing the conceptual structures of hundreds of words and constructions, Jackendoff extends and deepens the theory to come to grips with such crucial issues as roles and marking; arguments, modifiers, and adjuncts; binding and control; and the thematic linking hierarchy.

Book Synopsis Conceptual Structure, Discourse and Language by : Adele E. Goldberg

Download or read book Conceptual Structure, Discourse and Language written by Adele E. Goldberg. This book was released on 1996-06-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers is the result of the first Conceptual Structure, Discourse and Language conference (CSDL) held at the University of California, San Diego. The conference brought together researchers from both 'Cognitive' and 'Functional' approaches to linguistics. The papers in this volume span a variety of topics, but the common thread running through them is the claim that semantics and discourse properties are fundamental to the understanding of language. The themes presented in the volume include an emphasis on the dynamic nature of language, the relevance of a notion of viewpoint in grammatical analysis, the role and nature of metaphor and cognitive blend, the possibility of non-derivational ways to capture relationships among constructions and the importance of lexical semantics. This volume will appeal to a wide range of linguists, echoing the theme of the conference - bringing together two diverse approaches to linguistics.
