E. Garland who made the work possible, and Of the kindness of some ladies who have aided in the task; the body of the narrative (142 pages); an appendix of twenty-four pages; an Index of five pages and a Bibliography of four pages. All this material is typewritten in double Spacing, except the quotations used, which are in single space type. The whole is fully documented; footnotes at the bottom of the pages give references to the authorities mentioned in the Bibliography; a different notation marks the notices in the Appendix, a collection of valuable material which even if standing alone would abundantly justify publi cation. Probably this is the author's opus magnum, though his facile pen has written through the years much history and biography of a high order of excellence. Mr. Bradshaw draws an excellent picture of the social life in the county and he deals also with the political and educational. In the educational field he naturally has a great deal to say about hampden-sydney during its early days, as it pertains to the historical record of the county which he traces from its foundations, down to the present. His treatment of Longwood College is most complete and comprehensive, showing that Prince Edward did not neglect the education of its young women. He also mentions a number Of private schools which played an important part in the education of the young women of Prince Edward.
