Book Synopsis The Birth of Chinese Feminism by : Lydia He Liu

Download or read book The Birth of Chinese Feminism written by Lydia He Liu. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book repositions He-Yin Zhen as central to the development of feminism in China, juxtaposing her writing with fresh translations of works by two of her better-known male interlocutors. The editors begin with a detailed portrait of He-Yin Zhen's life and an analysis of her thought in comparative terms. They then present annotated translations of six of her major essays, as well as two foundational tracts by her male contemporaries, Jin Tianhe (1873-1947) and Liang Qichao (1873-1929), to which He-Yin's work responds and with which it engages. Jin Tianhe, a poet and educator, and Liang Qichao, a philosopher and journalist, understood feminism as a paternalistic cause that "enlightened" male intellectuals like themselves should defend. Zhen counters with an alternative conception of feminism that draws upon anarchism and other radical trends in thought.

Book Synopsis Engendering the Woman Question by : Yun Zhang

Download or read book Engendering the Woman Question written by Yun Zhang. This book was released on 2020. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Engendering the Woman Question, Zhang Yun adopts a new approach to examining the early Chinese women's periodical press. Rather than seeing this new print and publishing genre as a gendered site coded as either "feminine" or "masculine," this book approaches it as a mixed-gender public space where both men and women were intellectually active and involved in dynamic interactions to determine the contours of their discursive encounters.0Drawing upon a variety of novel textual modes such as polemical essays, historical biography, public speech, and expository essays, this book opens a window onto men's and women's gender-specific approaches to a series of prominent topics central to the Chinese woman question in the early twentieth century

Book excerpt: "Rarely does a reviewer or publisher encounter a milestone: this is it. It is the first major study of the development of Chinese feminism in what is arguably the most formative period in the history of modern China. In its women-centered approach, the book challenges the official women's history authored by the Chinese Communist Party and long accepted by Euro-American scholars. This book will set the agenda for future scholars researching the relationship between feminism and nationalism in China."—Dorothy Ko, author of Teachers of the Inner Chambers

Book Synopsis In the Event of Women by : Tani Barlow

Download or read book In the Event of Women written by Tani Barlow. This book was released on 2021-09-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Event of Women outlines the stakes of what Tani Barlow calls “the event of women.” Focusing on the era of the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century's Cultural Revolution, Barlow shows that an event is a politically inspired action to install a newly discovered truth, in this case the mammal origins of human social evolution. Highbrow and lowbrow social theory circulating in Chinese urban print media placed humanity's origin story in relation to commercial capital's modern advertising industry and the conclusion that women's liberation involved selling, buying, and advertising industrial commodities. The political struggle over how the truth of women in China would be performed and understood, Barlow shows, means in part that an event of women was likely global because its truth is vested in biology and physiology. In so doing, she reveals the ways in which historical universals are effected in places where truth claims are not usually sought. This book reconsiders Alain Badiou's concept of the event; particularly the question of whose political moment marks newly discovered truths.
