Book excerpt: Tiny changes to transform your life We’ve all set out to change our lives with big plans, bold ideas, and brilliant ambitions. And too often those resolutions and plans have lasted for a day or two before real life swoops in and we are back to normal. Or, perhaps even more frequently, we find ourselves so overwhelmed with life that we feel utterly powerless to even attempt to change anything. The Power of Small offers a way forward. Instead of pushing for large, dramatic changes, Aisling and Trish Leonard-Curtin help readers make small, manageable changes in their lives. Everyday decisions pile up to create transformation. Instead of being daunted by your goals and dreams or paralyzed by the business of life, The Power of Small will help you take the practical, approachable steps that will change your life, even if you feel completely stuck or defeated. As practicing psychologists, Aisling and Trish know first-hand the power of the techniques outlined in The Power of Small and have based their writing on numerous case studies and the latest psychological research. Emphasizing self-compassion and real, actionable steps, The Power of Small will empower you to make big changes in your life—one small step at a time.

Book Synopsis The Progress Principle by : Teresa Amabile

Download or read book The Progress Principle written by Teresa Amabile. This book was released on 2011-07-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What really sets the best managers above the rest? It’s their power to build a cadre of employees who have great inner work lives—consistently positive emotions; strong motivation; and favorable perceptions of the organization, their work, and their colleagues. The worst managers undermine inner work life, often unwittingly. As Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer explain in The Progress Principle, seemingly mundane workday events can make or break employees’ inner work lives. But it’s forward momentum in meaningful work—progress—that creates the best inner work lives. Through rigorous analysis of nearly 12,000 diary entries provided by 238 employees in 7 companies, the authors explain how managers can foster progress and enhance inner work life every day. The book shows how to remove obstacles to progress, including meaningless tasks and toxic relationships. It also explains how to activate two forces that enable progress: (1) catalysts—events that directly facilitate project work, such as clear goals and autonomy—and (2) nourishers—interpersonal events that uplift workers, including encouragement and demonstrations of respect and collegiality. Brimming with honest examples from the companies studied, The Progress Principle equips aspiring and seasoned leaders alike with the insights they need to maximize their people’s performance.

Book Synopsis On the Power of Small-Depth Computation by : Emanuele Viola

Download or read book On the Power of Small-Depth Computation written by Emanuele Viola. This book was released on 2009. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we discuss selected topics on small-depth computation, presenting a few unpublished proofs along the way. The four sections contain: (1) A unified treatment of the challenge of exhibiting explicit functions that have small correlation with low-degree polynomials over {0, 1}.(2) An unpublished proof that small bounded-depth circuits (AC0) have exponentially small correlation with the parity function. The proof is due to Klivans and Vadhan; it builds upon and simplifies previous ones. (3) Valiant's simulation of log-depth linear-size circuits of fan-in 2 by sub-exponential size circuits of depth 3 and unbounded fan-in. To our knowledge, a proof of this result has never appeared in full. (4) Applebaum, Ishai, and Kushilevitz's cryptography in bounded depth.

Of course it can! In this book for young readers (who know a thing or two about being small), you can take a super close look at details too little to be seen with the human eye. Powerful shots from scanning electron microscopes show shark skin, bird feathers, the hairs on a honeybee's eye, and so much more, proving that tiny details can make a BIG difference.
