Book excerpt: The attainment of democracy as a system of government is a long and still ongoing struggle for most countries in the world. While it is true that, nowhere on the planet has democracy been fully achieved, it is also true that when it comes to democracy, Africa has seen and experienced the most struggles. With some countries in Africa slipping into reversal modes at worst and others struggling to keep up with the ideals of democracy, many scholars and popular writings have concluded that Africa lacks the political culture to sustain democracy. This research explores this assertion and argues that, contrary to popular writings and belief, Africa actually possesses the political culture that sustains democracy. Instead of assuming that Africa simply lacks a democratic culture, this research argues that it is rather the form of democracy being promoted on the continent that does not resonate and merge well with African realities. Using Ghana as a case study, this research draws conclusions from a careful study of history, ethnography and culture to show that Africa indeed possesses the political culture to sustain democracy. In addition, how specific cultures in Africa can be used to sustain democracy will be explored.
