Download or read book The Place that Inhabits Us written by Sixteen Rivers Press. This book was released on 2010. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. California Studies. Foreword by Robert Hass. The poems in this anthology embody what it's like to live in the astonishing weave of cities and towns, landscape and language, climate and history that make up the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Selected by the members of Sixteen Rivers Press, a regional poetry collective named after the web of rivers that flow into San Francisco Bay, the poems in THE PLACE THAT INHABITS US are drawn from both a physical and a metaphoric watershed. From the granite slopes of the Sierra to the Delta, through the Coastal Range to the bay and shores of the Pacific, one hundred poems by poets well known and not well known, living and dead, map this improbable region. There are egrets and grievous losses here; prayers, panhandlers, Delta mornings and sunsets in the 'hood; the fog, certainly, and the bridges, but there are shades of Dante on a Miwok trail, and Wang-wei haunts the slopes of Grizzly Peak. These poems are internal maps, "the mental maps that for humans," writes Robert Hass in the foreword, "make a place a place." Gathered together, they evoke the San Francisco Bay watershed, the place that inhabits us.

Book Synopsis Dust Bowl Venus: Poems by : Stella Beratlis

Download or read book Dust Bowl Venus: Poems written by Stella Beratlis. This book was released on 2021-05-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. California Interest. Music. Sometimes the ground shifts under our feet and leaves us stumbling, our world changed. DUST BOWL VENUS documents that stumbling, that changed world, and also the regaining of a footing that, if not what we had hoped for, is what we live with. In her second powerful collection of poetry, framed by the lyrics of Modesto-based country-bluegrass songwriter, Hazel Houser, Stella Beratlis explores the landscapes of California's Great Central Valley, the landscapes of fear and hope in the cancer diagnosis of her daughter, and the landscape of regret --what we have let go and what we have gained from letting go. Beratlis pays her characteristic attention to detail, invoking, for example, Louis Armstrong's blue kitchen and the hinges squeaking on an ice chest lid, in order to create her complex, lyrical images. She writes that "ghosts / have always been walking / through the spaces of our home," and she has listened to these ghosts. This book is filled with imagery and emotion that builds and curves and accumulates, leaving the reader breathless, glad for the shifting of the earth that gave us these poems.

Book Synopsis Buried Treasure by : Dan Bellm

Download or read book Buried Treasure written by Dan Bellm. This book was released on 1999. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. LGBT Studies. Winner of 1998 CSU Poetry Center Prize. "This stunning book is fiercely alive, and awake to the self as both singular and inextricably part of the whole—to the body as one in a field of yearning and failing human forms. 'Delle Avenue' is—and I don't say this lightly—a great poem of city life, of the confluence of memory and history and voice which city streets are. Dan Bellm's genuine authority and his vulnerable, almost physical presence on the page lead us, somehow, to connection with what is larger, more ongoing, than any single person is; he sings the anxious and lovely story of his place and time."—Mark Doty
