Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pioneers of Old Ontario In the matter of location, the new-comers seem to have been allowed a wide range of choice. Lands, in what are now designated the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, and Ontario, were offered for settlement. Coming from New York and other agricultural states, many of the im migrants chose Ontario, settling for the most part within easy distance of the Great Lakes waterway. With their coming, the pioneer period of agri culture in Ontario may be said to have begun. Nearly all of those who came at first were of humble origin, of honest purpose, and almost destitute of means. For two or three years, owing to crop failures and lack of equipment, they received some aid from the Government. A considerable proportion of these first settlers were Loyalists, and mingling with them were discharged soldiers, many of them Hessians, who took up land in preference to returning to Europe. Book Synopsis Pioneers in Canada (Classic Reprint) by : Harry Johnston

Download or read book Pioneers in Canada (Classic Reprint) written by Harry Johnston. This book was released on 2015-07-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers in Canada The publishers of this book asked me to write a series of works for the reading of boys and girls which should deal with "real adventures," in parts of the world either wild and uncontrolled by any civilized government, or at any rate regions full of dangers, of wonderful discoveries; in which the daring and heroism of white men (and sometime of white women) stood out clearly against backgrounds of unfamiliar landscapes, peopled with strange nations, savage tribes, dangerous beasts, or wonderful birds. These books would again and again illustrate the first coming of the white race into regions inhabited by people of a different type, with brown, black, or yellow skins; how the European was received, and how he treated these races of the soil which gradually came under his rule owing to his superior knowledge, weapons, wealth, or powers of persuasion. The books were to tell the plain truth, even if here and there they showed the white man to have behaved badly, or if they revealed the fact that the American Indian, the Negro, the Malay, the black Australian was sometimes cruel and treacherous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Life Among the Loyalists in Upper Canada In the following pages I have endeavour ed to bring the reader into closer touch with the first settlers. Many excellent historical works have traced the development of our province and laid before us the achieve ments of our public men. In vain may we turn over volume after volume in our search for information concerning the evolution of the homestead, and the customs and peculiarities of the commoii folk of long ago. For the most part the sources of my infor mation have been original documents and interviews with old men and women, many of whom have since passed away. Even from such sources it is an easy matter to fall into error; but I have discarded what I feared was not trustworthy, and believe that I can confidently ask the reader to accept the general statements of facts as thorough ly reliable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Days in Ontario A hundred years ago, a voyage from Britain te Canada was by no means a pleasure trip. Even fo1 cabin passengers there were many hardships, and the vast majority of emigrants travelled steerage. Se long was the voyage, so poor were the living quarters and food, and so great the danger from sickness, that one wonders at the courage of our pioneer ancestors ir attempting it. Only the worst of conditions at home could drive men and women to undergo the sufferings of a passage in an emigrant ship, lacking comforts anc even food.
