Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1917, Vol. 41 At the Pennypacker Reunion, held October 4th, 1877, our late President in describing a member of the family who had become a Senator of the United States, said: Reverdy Johnson wrote to me of Isaac S., of Virginia, that possessing 'sterling integrity he had the confi dence of every man in the Senate.' Thaddeus Stevens complained of Elijah F. That he was 'too damned honest, ' and this trait, which seems to crap out even in our politicians, I think we may claim as a family char acteristic. He also said: Physically we are gener ally large, with dark hair and eyes, and if we could get our neighbors to repeat to us the comments they some times make in our absence, we would probably learn that we wear full sized stockings and are not handsome. 'this pedigree, as Governor Pennypacker once wrote, is not without a certain philosophical value, and he tersely declared: Man is a result as well as a cause.
