The treasurer pledged himself to appropriate the money as Nonnus commanded. The holy bishop added: ' If you violate this oath, if, of yourself or by the instrumentality of another, you withdraw any portion of this, may you be anathema; may you have part with those who demanded the death of the Saviour." That same day Pelagia assembled her slaves. "Hitherto," she said to them, "I have been your mistress; to-day, I am your servant in Jesus Christ. If I have ill-treated you, if I have spoken harshly to you, if I have given you an example of pride and sensuality, pardon me now, that I may obtain pardon from God." The slaves wept. "You have always been kind to us," they said, "and we would be ungrateful were we to complain. We should ask pardon of you for not having served you better." Andronicus, choked by emotion, could not utter a word, but from the depths of his heart his prayer of thanksgiving ascended to heaven: "Now, O Lord, let Thy servant depart in peace." "From this moment," continued Pelagia, "you arc free. God, in His infinite mercy, has liberated me from the yoke of sin; it is just that I should liberate you from the yoke of slavery." She distributed among them money and crowns of gold with which to pay for their formal emancipation. Those who were not Christians, won by the beautiful example of the Pearl of Antioch, begged Nonnus and Bomana to instruct them and prepare them for baptism. It was determined that Pelagia's villa should be, as soon as possible, converted into a hospital, and that Dione should remain to serve the suffering members of Jesus Christ. Pelagia gave the kiss of peace, which was to be...

Book Synopsis The Creation of the Principality of Antioch, 1098-1130 by : Thomas S. Asbridge

Book excerpt: The first major study of the principality of Antioch, reasserting its significance and challenging the dominance of Jerusalem in modern crusading historiography. The First Crusade wrought many changes across the medieval world, not least in Levant, where the expedition culminated in the Frankish conquest of much of Syria and Palestine. This book is the first major study of the early history of one of these Latin settlements, the principality of Antioch; it reasserts the significance of Antioch, and challenges the dominant position of the kingdom of Jerusalem in modern crusading historiography. Thomas Asbridge examines the formation of Antioch's political, military and ecclesiastical frameworks and explains how the principality survived in the hostile political environment of the Near East. He also demonstrates that Latin Antioch was shapedby the complex world of the Levant, facing a diverse range of influences and potential threats from the neighbouring forces of Byzantium and Islam. Historians of the Frankish East and of medieval Europe in the eleventh century will find this an important contribution to crusading history; it is also a significant contribution to the study of frontier societies and medieval communities. THOMAS S. ASBRIDGE is lecturer in early medieval history at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London.
