Furthermore, it often occurs in the experience of a general machinist, that he is required to make a pattern either in iron or wood, and the complete isolation which usually exists between the pattern shop and the machine shop, is an effective bar to the acquisition of knowledge by observation. The information is given from actual pattern shop practice, and in the ordinary workshop parlance.
