Book excerpt: I sleep, but my heart wakes, says the Song of Songs. The other nightnames the sleepless night we spend in dreams. From The Interpretation of Dreams to Finnegans Wake, many of the great writing projects of the first half of the twentieth century tell tales of this sleepless night. In the post-war waning of the dreamier modernist projects, writers such as Beckett and Blanchot work through the residual fatigue. The Other Night looks anew into the causes of this fatigue. Beginning by establishing a link between Freud's claim that the dream is a kind of pictographic writing and his metapsychologicalclaim that the dreamrepresents the impossibility of complete sleep, The Other Night studies, in readings of Joyce, Beckett, and Blanchot, the unrest, at once literary and political, in which dreams come to u

Book Synopsis I Saw Eternity the Other Night by : Timothy Day

Download or read book I Saw Eternity the Other Night written by Timothy Day. This book was released on 2018-11-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sound of the choir of King's College, Cambridge - its voices perfectly blended, its emotions restrained, its impact sublime - has become famous all over the world, and for many, the distillation of a particular kind of Englishness. This is especially so at Christmas time, with the broadcast of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, whose centenary is celebrated this year. How did this small band of men and boys in a famous fenland town in England come to sing in the extraordinary way they did in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries? It has been widely assumed that the King's style essentially continues an English choral tradition inherited directly from the Middle Ages. In this original and illuminating book, Timothy Day shows that this could hardly be further from the truth. Until the 1930s, the singing at King's was full of high Victorian emotionalism, like that at many other English choral foundations well into the twentieth century. The choir's modern sound was brought about by two intertwined revolutions, one social and one musical. From 1928, singing with the trebles in place of the old lay clerks, the choir was fully made up of choral scholars - college men, reading for a degree. Under two exceptional directors of music - Boris Ord from 1929 and David Willcocks from 1958 - the style was transformed and the choir broadcast and recorded until it became the epitome of English choral singing, setting the benchmark for all other choral foundations either to imitate or to react against. Its style has now been taken over and adapted by classical performers who sing both sacred and secular music in secular settings all over the world with a precision inspired by the King's tradition. I Saw Eternity the Other Night investigates the timbres of voices, the enunciation of words, the use of vibrato. But the singing of all human beings, in whatever style, always reflects in profound and subtle ways their preoccupations and attitudes to life. These are the underlying themes explored by this book.

Download or read book The Other Night Before Christmas written by Morgan Wilson. This book was released on 2017-12-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christmas is a time when our best is evident in many wonderful ways. Beautifully wrapped gifts placed under a perfectly decorated tree take our hearts and minds on a journey through many of the fondest memories the season brings. The table setting where family and friends will gather stirs our thoughts in kind. Yet it is the human spirit that drives us all to do as well as possible in preparation for the big day. The night before Christmas can be a scene of madness and mayhem, though of a joyful kind; but it is mostly a perfect picture of the ones we love, captured by their unselfish efforts in preparation for the Savior’s birthday.

Book Synopsis The Other Side of Night by : Adam Hamdy

Download or read book The Other Side of Night written by Adam Hamdy. This book was released on 2022-10-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Matt Haig and Anthony Horowitz, a “strange, compelling, and ultimately moving head-spinner of a novel” (John Connolly) in which the lives of a disgraced police officer, a prolific author, and an upstanding citizen are inextricably bound together by a series of mysterious deaths. The Other Side of Night begins with a man named David Asha writing about his biggest regret: his sudden separation from his son, Elliot. In his grief, David tells a story. Next, we step into the life of Harriet Kealty, a police officer trying to clear her name after a lapse of judgment. She discovers a curious inscription in a secondhand book—a plea: Help me, he’s trying to kill me. Who wrote this note? Who is “he”? This note leads Harri to David Asha, who was last seen stepping off a cliff. Police suspect he couldn’t cope after his wife’s sudden death. Still, why would this man jump and leave behind his young son? Quickly, Harri’s attention zeroes in on a person she knows all too well. Ben Elmys: once the love of her life. A surrogate father to Elliot Asha and trusted friend to the Ashas. Ben may also be a murderer. Compulsively readable and thought-provoking, “The Other Side of Night is one of those rare books that you’ll still be thinking about long after the last page” (Jenny Blackhurst, author of How I Lost You).
