Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional foods, diets and food systems play an important role in people’s nutritional status. As the best products of traditional food systems, geographical indication (GI) foods have a great potential to contribute to healthy diets and curb non-communicable diseases. This paper presents five case studies around the world on the nutritional potential of registered GI foods and explores the link between the production processes and the nutritional composition of the final products. The nutritional characteristics of these foods can be largely attributed to their unique ingredients and production procedures, which are linked to their geographical origins. The paper also discusses the development of GI specifications to maintain and improve nutritional values, the role of GI foods in healthy diets, and the determination of food composition. Finally, suggestions on how to leverage GI foods for healthy diets are provided.

This book was released on 2023-08-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 20 December, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and oriGIn hosted the online event, Third regional consultation on geographical indications in Europe and Central Asia. Some 111 representatives from 34 countries of geographical indications (GIs) groups, national intellectual property offices and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), other public authorities (the representatives of ministries for agriculture and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development), as well as geographical indication (GI) experts, participated in the event. A discussion paper was presented during the consultation outlining key concepts and global trends concerning GIs today. The empirical material presented in the paper was primarily built on oriGIn and FAO experiences, but also on country studies prepared for the Russian Federation, Republic of Moldova, Georgia, a group of Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), as well as European Union countries (France, Poland, Hungary and Croatia). On behalf of oriGIn – the global alliance of GI – Massimo Vittori, Managing Director, coordinated the activities carried out by oriGIn.

Download or read book Developing a roadmap towards increased sustainability in geographical indication systems written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This book was released on 2024-02-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FAO and the Global Alliance of Geographical Indications (oriGin) have been collaborating since 2016 to develop the Sustainability Strategy for Geographical Indications (SSGI). This strategy for sustainable GIs aims to highlight and strengthen the relationship between GI systems and sustainability, raise stakeholders’ awareness of their role in GI sustainability and boost the sustainability performance of GI systems. Geographical indications (GIs) are signs used on products that originate from a specific territory and possess qualities or a reputation related to that origin. Through their establishment and management, GIs can stimulate endogenous development when ensuring leadership by local producers, product specifications that are tailored to local conditions and recognition by buyers of products’ origin-linked qualities. This guide provides a practical step-by-step roadmap for GI organizations that wish to engage on their own sustainability journey. The roadmap consists of three key stages: 1. prioritize sustainability topics for the GI system and engage with public and private stakeholders; 2. assess needs and establish a baseline for each priority topic; and 3. monitor and improve the GI system’s sustainability performances, and regularly review the roadmap in collaboration with allies. Communication is the fourth crucial and transversal component of the roadmap; it improves efficiency during the process and allows stakeholders to share and celebrate the results. By following the eight steps outlined in this guide, with detailed guidance, examples and models, GI practitioners will be able to design a sustainability roadmap for their GI system, together with stakeholders.

Book Synopsis Leveraging food systems to reduce poverty and malnutrition by : Raza, A and Soares, F.

Download or read book Leveraging food systems to reduce poverty and malnutrition written by Raza, A and Soares, F.. This book was released on 2020-12-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though substantial progress has been achieved worldwide in reducing both poverty and malnutrition, much is yet to be done. There are signs that the progress made in both dimensions has stalled in recent years. Poor-quality diets have become a major driver for overweight and obesity and associated non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, and some types of cancers. Conflict and climate vulnerability have been identified as major obstacles to reaching Sustainable Development Goal targets related to malnutrition by 2030. In 2019, economic downturns and slowdowns hindered efforts even further. More recently, the COVID-19 crisis has imposed even harsher conditions to countries.Poverty and malnutrition are inevitably linked, and therefore addressing one can help address the other. Given that most of the world’s extremely poor people and stunted children live primarily in rural areas and rely mostly on agriculture, the agriculture and food systems approach can offer an opportunity to reduce both poverty and malnutrition. The food systems approach places equal emphasis on both the supply and demand dimensions that are critical for ensuring healthier diets and better nutrition for poor and vulnerable groups. This special issue of Policy in Focus is dedicated to answering a crucial question: How can a food systems approach be used to design and implement policies and investments that reach those most vulnerable to poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and suboptimal diets? We hope that the contributions contained in this volume, by leading academics and development practitioners, exploring the linkages between nutrition, food systems, and poverty, can help stakeholders and policymakers make inroads towards the promotion of food and nutrition security and the reduction of rural poverty.

Book Synopsis Promoting sustainability through the registration of geographical indications by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Download or read book Promoting sustainability through the registration of geographical indications written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This book was released on 2023-04-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess characteristics or a reputation that are intrinsic to that origin. GIs can be registered as intellectual property rights (IPR) to ensure their protection. In countries where GIs are recognized under a public framework, public authorities can play an important role in the creation of favourable conditions for GIs to contribute to sustainable development and sustainable food systems. In particular, public authorities in charge of GI rights have an important responsibility when examining applications for protection, and the registration should ensure that GIs can function well. The examination of applications not only serves to verify the legitimacy of the GI as an IPR in terms of the link to the origin, but can also influence the GI system’s effectiveness and sustainability performance, in relation with key factors highlighted in the literature such as the clear definition of the specific quality linked to the geographical origin, the local governance, the appropriate marketing strategy. The objective of these guidelines is to provide guidance to public authorities and experts that examine GI applications. These guidelines provide examples and recommendations related to the procedures for the examination of GI requests. They focus on the two types of criteria for the registration: 1) the legal criteria that determine the admissibility for registration (link to origin) and 2) additional criteria that can be considered to help improve the GI system’s sustainability. Finally, the guidelines offer a list of questions to guide examiners along the examination process.
