Book excerpt: Computing and information and communications technology (ICT) has dramatically changed how we work and live, has had profound effects on nearly every sector of society, has transformed whole industries, and is a key component of U.S. global leadership. A fundamental driver of advances in computing and ICT has been the fact that the single-processor performance has, until recently, been steadily and dramatically increasing year over years, based on a combination of architectural techniques, semiconductor advances, and software improvements. Users, developers, and innovators were able to depend on those increases, translating that performance into numerous technological innovations and creating successive generations of ever more rich and diverse products, software services, and applications that had profound effects across all sectors of society. However, we can no longer depend on those extraordinary advances in single-processor performance continuing. This slowdown in the growth of single-processor computing performance has its roots in fundamental physics and engineering constraints-multiple technological barriers have converged to pose deep research challenges, and the consequences of this shift are deep and profound for computing and for the sectors of the economy that depend on and assume, implicitly or explicitly, ever-increasing performance. From a technology standpoint, these challenges have led to heterogeneous multicore chips and a shift to alternate innovation axes that include, but are not limited to, improving chip performance, mobile devices, and cloud services. As these technical shifts reshape the computing industry, with global consequences, the United States must be prepared to exploit new opportunities and to deal with technical challenges. The New Global Ecosystem in Advanced Computing: Implications for U.S. Competitiveness and National Security outlines the technical challenges, describe the global research landscape, and explore implications for competition and national security.

Book excerpt: This volume results from the first research conference organized by Computer Professional for Social Responsibility (CSPR). Each chapter is authored by a computer scientist addressing the social impact of computers. Four chapters describe the milieu in which computer science is managed and financed. Three chapters present software engineering analyses of cost reliability and safety and relate them to defence policy. Five chapters explore the implications of applying artificial intelligence technology in particular areas, from education to combat, and the final chapters confront present and future dilemmas from philosophical and ethical perspectives.

Book Synopsis Emerging Ecosystem-Centric Business Models for Sustainable Value Creation by : Ziouvelou, Xenia

Download or read book Emerging Ecosystem-Centric Business Models for Sustainable Value Creation written by Ziouvelou, Xenia. This book was released on 2021-08-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hyperconnected, constantly evolving world has emerged. A world where people (internet of people), things (internet of things), and data (internet of data) are linked together, shaping the global economy while demanding new, innovative approaches for value creation. The era of hyper-connectivity is no longer characterized by centralized firm-centric business structures and traditional intra-firm and inter-firm processes. Open, distributed ecosystemic formations have started to emerge, utilizing cutting edge technologies to harness the collective power, co-creation ability, and intelligence of the crowd, the data, and the environment in an open participatory value co-creation mode. However, the question has become whether the frameworks, models, and tools that organizations use to create value will remain the same in the new business environment and within the organizations themselves. Existing literature on ecosystems, business models, and business model innovation are starting to examine these aspects. Emerging Ecosystem-Centric Business Models for Sustainable Value Creation explores emerging technology-enabled ecosystems and ecosystem-centric business models in theory and practice, from a business and technological perspective, and in a range of industrial settings, aiming to contribute to the existing knowledge of innovative technology-advanced ecosystems and business models, facilitating their design, implementation, and sustainable value creation. It examines the dynamics of this technology-powered revolution and how it is influencing the foundations of value creation and business modeling in novel ecosystemic formations across the HMD triangle: human, machine, and data. The target audience of this book is researchers and professionals in the fields of innovation, business, and strategy as well as computer science and information technology, along with managers, executives, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in new ways to create value in emerging and future ecosystems via innovative ecosystem-centric business models and strategies.
