Book Synopsis The New East End by : Michael Young

Book excerpt: This is non-fiction Brick Lane -what life is really like around Brick Lane and the East End. One of the most influential non-fiction books of the 1950s was Family and Kinship in East London which examined in great depth the life of people living in the dockland areas that had been so comprehensively destroyed in the blitz. What has happened since? In the 50 years since the whole area has gone into terrible decline; has been comprehensively redeveloped (sometimes more than once); and, most important of all, has seen the traditional families largely leave, to be replaced by a huge influx of Bangladeshi families - many of whom are now into the second generation. What are their lives like? How is the community coping with the radical change? What are relations like between the old white population and the new Asian population? Does government policy affect racism? (Here the authors show - startlingly - that housing policies have made race relations much worse and must be changed. This will be very controversial). The book is a comprehensive examination of life in one of the most intriguing parts of England - but it stands for all Britain, and indeed everywhere in the world with large new immigrant populations.

Book Synopsis A New East Asia by : Kazuko Mōri

Download or read book A New East Asia written by Kazuko Mōri. This book was released on 2007. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia is normally identified as a group of countries lying along the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, but in recent years scholars have begun thinking about a new East Asia that is a community rather than a set of sovereign states. This regional community is a theoretical notion variously defined on the basis of economic or political relations, philosophical orientations, language or other criteria, with each standard producing a different set of boundaries. This book looks at the new East Asia from a Northeast Asian perspective, considering it both as a theoretical construct and a practical reality. The authors are Asian Studies specialists, mainly from Japan but with contributions from Korea and the United States, and they consider the trade and economic interaction, diplomacy, and security arrangements of East Asia. Prepared as part of a five-year research program conducted by Waseda University's 21st Century Center of Excellence for the Creation of Contemporary Asian Studies, the essays are published here in English for the first time

Book excerpt: West Rock and East Rock are bold and beautiful features around New Haven, Connecticut. They resemble monumental gateways (or time-tried sentinels) and represent a moment in geologic time when the North American and African continents began to separate and volcanism affected much of Connecticut. The rocks attracted the attention of poets, painters, and naturalists when beliefs rose about the spiritual dimensions of nature in the early 19th century. More than two dozen artists, including Frederick Church, George Durrie, and John Weir, captured their magic and produced an assortment of classic American landscapes. In the same period, the science of geology evolved rapidly, triggered by the controversy between proponents and opponents of biblical explanations for the origin of rocks. Lavishly illustrated, featuring over sixty paintings and prints, this book is a perfect introduction to understanding the relationship of geology and art. It will delight those who appreciate landscape painting, and anyone who has seen the grandeur of East and West Rock.

Book excerpt: East Asia enjoyed a role as a growth center of the world economy from the 1960s until the currency and economic crisis of 1997. In 1993, the World Bank issued a report entitled "The East Asian Miracle: Economic Growth and Public Policy," in which the bank expressed its admiration for the region 's rapid economic develop ment. However, within only four years the region had fallen prey to the currency and economic crisis that spread outward from Thailand. In the midst of the crisis, many East Asian countries began at long last to cooperate with one another in order to cope with these unprecedented difficulties and to prevent another crisis. In fact, the East Asian region was an exception throughout the 1990s with re spect to regionalism. A surge of regionalism, which began in Europe in the second half ofthe 1980s, spread to North America and Latin America. However, the North east Asian region in particular, consisting of Japan, China (People's Republic of China), and Korea (Republic of Korea), did not participate in any kind of regional economic arrangements. Regional cooperation frameworks were limited to coun tries belonging to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and did not spread to the Northeast Asian region.
