Book Synopsis The Neuroethics of Biomarkers by : Matthew L. Baum

Download or read book The Neuroethics of Biomarkers written by Matthew L. Baum. This book was released on 2016. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroscientists are mining nucleic acids, fluids, and brain images for biomarkers of risk of brain disorders. This book brings clarity to several debates on the neuroethics of biomarkers by arguing for the abandonment of a categorical concept of disorder (sick vs. well) and the adoption of an explicitly probabilistic one.

Book Synopsis Neuroscience Biomarkers and Biosignatures by : Institute of Medicine

Download or read book Neuroscience Biomarkers and Biosignatures written by Institute of Medicine. This book was released on 2008-02-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomarkers, or biological markers, are quantitative measurements that offer researchers and clinicians valuable insight into diagnosis, treatment and prognosis for many disorders and diseases. A major goal in neuroscience medical research is establishing biomarkers for disorders of the nervous system. Given the promising potential and necessity for neuroscience biomarkers, the Institute of Medicine Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders convened a public workshop and released the workshop summary entitled Neuroscience Biomarkers and Biosignatures: Converging Technologies, Emerging Partnerships. The workshop brought together experts from multiple areas to discuss the most promising and practical arenas in neuroscience in which biomarkers will have the greatest impact. The main objective of the workshop was to identify and discuss biomarker targets that are not currently being aggressively pursued but that could have the greatest near-term impact on the rate at which new treatments are brought forward for psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Book Synopsis Cancer Biomarkers by : Anne Blanchard

Download or read book Cancer Biomarkers written by Anne Blanchard. This book was released on 2017-04-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care is undergoing a shift from a 'one-size-fits all' approach to more personalised medicine. One way of personalising cancer treatments is through biomarkers: molecules or biochemical changes found in the patient's tissues and body fluids. This book reflects upon the promise of cancer biomarkers and asks questions such as: How may the complexity of cancer biology impede the robustness of biomarkers in the clinic? How should one draw the line between the various sub-groups of patients for personalised treatment? How can one evaluate the cost-effectiveness and fairness of personalised cancer treatments? By bringing together authors from the fields of science and technology studies, medical ethics and philosophy, health economics and oncology, the book aims to give a critical yet accessible overview of some of the key social, ethical and economic issues that surround cancer biomarkers. "The book should be required reading for oncologists, medical students, graduate students and especially for those who make policy decisions regarding the use and reimbursement of cancer biomarkers." - Bruce Zetter, Charles Nowiszewski Professor of Cancer Biology in the Department of Surgery, Harvard Medical School

Download or read book Global Mental Health and Neuroethics written by Dan J. Stein. This book was released on 2020-01-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Mental Health and Neuroethics explores conceptual, ethical and clinical issues that have emerged with the expansion of clinical neuroscience into middle- and low-income countries. Conceptual issues covered include avoiding scientism and skepticism in global mental health, integrating evidence-based and value-based global medicine, and developing a welfarist approach to the practice of global psychiatry. Ethical issues addressed include those raised by developments in neurogenetics, cosmetic psychopharmacology and deep brain stimulation. Perspectives drawing on global mental health and neuroethics are used to explore a number of different clinical disorders and developmental stages, ranging from childhood through to old age. Synthesizes existing work at the intersection of global mental health and neuroethics Presents the work of leading practitioners of global mental health and neuroethics who address clinical issues Looks at clinical decision-making in settings with non-Western values and customs Covers patient empowerment, human rights, cognitive enhancement, and more
