Book Synopsis The Mystery of Israel and the Church, Vol. 3 by : Lawrence Feingold

Download or read book The Mystery of Israel and the Church, Vol. 3 written by Lawrence Feingold. This book was released on 2010-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, the third in a series, seeks to elucidate the complex and beautiful relationship between Biblical Israel and the Church in God's plan. The Church is viewed as the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies of the messianic Kingdom. Themes include: the People of God; the four marks of the Church (one, holy, catholic, and apostolic); the oral Torah and oral Tradition; the universal call to holiness; justification; continuity and discontinuity between Israel and the Church; and Mary, daughter of Zion and Mother of the Church. It is hoped that this book may deepen the awareness of Catholics (and others) of the luminous teaching of the Second Vatican Council in Nostra aetate 4: "The Church cannot forget that . . . she draws sustenance from the root of that well-cultivated olive tree [Israel] onto which have been grafted the wild shoots, the Gentiles."

Book excerpt: Faith Comes from What Is Heard: An Introduction to Fundamental Theology informs both the heart and mind as it brings together dogmatic and biblical theology, the Thomistic tradition, the teachings of the Fathers of the Church, and the contemporary Magisterium. Drawing heavily upon the works of St. Thomas Aquinas, Bl. John Henry Newman, Joseph Ratzinger, and St. John Paul II, the author examines the foundations of Catholic theology, or Fundamental Theology, “which is theology’s reflection on itself as a discipline, its method, and its foundation in God’s Revelation transmitted to us through Scripture and Tradition.” Although Faith Comes from What Is Heard is useful for all Catholics who want to understand the foundations of their faith, it is specifically designed to serve as a textbook for courses in Fundamental Theology in seminaries and in graduate and undergraduate programs in theology. It can also serve as a textbook for introductory theology and Scripture courses. The topics covered in Faith Comes from What Is Heard include: Revelation and FaithTheologyTradition and the MagisteriumBiblical Hermeneuticsthe Historicity of the Gospelsand Biblical Typology

Download or read book The Mystery of Israel and the Church, Vol. 2 written by Lawrence Feingold. This book was released on 2010-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, the second in a series, presents a theology of Israel and her mission in salvation history from the perspective of the Catholic faith. It seeks to bring out the beautiful role of Israel in the history of salvation and the deep ties between Israel and the Church. Key elements of theology-faith, hope, charity, the problem of suffering, priesthood and sacrifice, marriage and the family, the gifts of the Holy Spirit-are treated from the perspectives of the Old and the New Covenants. It is hoped that this book may deepen the awareness of Catholics and others of the luminous teaching of the Second Vatican Council in Nostra aetate 4: "As the sacred synod searches into the mystery of the Church, it remembers the bond that spiritually ties the people of the New Covenant to Abraham's stock."

Book Synopsis Catholic Doctrines on the Jewish People after Vatican II by : Gavin D'Costa

Download or read book Catholic Doctrines on the Jewish People after Vatican II written by Gavin D'Costa. This book was released on 2019-10-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely study Gavin D'Costa explores Roman Catholic doctrines after the Second Vatican Council regarding the Jewish people (1965 - 2015). It establishes the emergence of the teaching that God's covenant with the Jewish people is irrevocable. What does this mean for Catholics regarding Jewish religious rituals, the land, and mission? Catholic Doctrines on the Jewish People after Vatican II establishes that the Catholic Church has a new teaching about the Jewish people: the covenant made with God is irrevocable. D'Costa faces head-on three important issues arising from the new teaching. First, previous Catholic teachings seem to claim Jewish rituals are invalid. He argues this is not the case. Earlier teachings allow us positive insights into the modern question. Second, a nuanced case for Catholic minimalist Zionism is advanced, without detriment to the Palestinian cause. This is in keeping with Catholic readings of scripture and the development of the Holy See's attitude to the State of Israel. Third, the painful question of mission is explored. D'Costa shows the new approach safeguards Jewish identity and allows for the possibility of successful witness by Hebrew Catholics who retain their Jewish identity and religious life.
