Book Synopsis The Moral Life According to Mark by : M. John-Patrick O’Connor

Download or read book The Moral Life According to Mark written by M. John-Patrick O’Connor. This book was released on 2022-04-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. John-Patrick O'Connor proposes that - in contrast to recent contemporary scholarship that rarely focuses on the ethical implications of discipleship and Christology - Mark's Gospel, as our earliest life of Jesus, presents a theological description of the moral life. Arguing for Mark's ethical validity in comparison to Matthew and Luke, O'Connor begins with an analysis of the moral environment of ancient biographies, exploring what types of Jewish and Greco-Romanic conceptions of morality found their way into Hellenistic biographies. Turning to the Gospel's own examples of morality, O'Connor examines moral accountability according to Mark, including moral reasoning, the nature of a world in conflict, and accountability in both God's family and to God's authority. He then turns to images of the accountable self, including an analysis of virtues and virtuous practices within the Gospel. O'Connor concludes with the personification of evil, human responsibility, punitive consequences, and evil's role in Mark's moral landscape.

Book excerpt: This college edition of Our Moral Life in Christ by Rev. Peter Armenio focuses on the Person and teachings of Christ and examines the moral life from that perspective. Christian morality is not only for "knowing," but also for "living." This is a practical manner in which the spirit of Christ is made manifest in the world, thus contributing to the improvement of society. Based on the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, Our Moral Life in Christ presents the teachings of the Magisterium on moral issues in modern society. Inspired by recent papal documents, especially the encyclical The Splendor of Truth, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, this book provides the moral formation that will help the reader to become more Christlike in service of love and in the journey toward personal perfection as well as providing the foundation to pursue advanced theological studies.

Book Synopsis Ethical Wisdom by : Mark Matousek

Download or read book Ethical Wisdom written by Mark Matousek. This book was released on 2011-05-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a bestselling author—“a riveting, fun, and insightful tour of life’s meaning and purpose, essential reading for anyone drawn to the query, ‘How ought we to live?'” (Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence) Contrary to what we’ve been taught in our reason-obsessed culture, argues Matousek, emotions are the bedrock of ethical life; without them, human beings cannot be empathic, moral, or good. But how do we make the judgment call between self-interest and caring for others? What does being good really mean? Which parts of morality are biological, which ethical? When should instinct be trusted and when does it lead us into trouble? How can we know ourselves to be good amidst the hypocrisy, fears, and sabotaging appetites that pervade our two-sided natures? Drawing on the latest scientific research and interviews with social scientists, spiritual leaders, ex-cons, altruists, and philosophers, Matousek examines morality from all angles in this thoroughly entertaining and helpful guide to crossing one’s own murky moral terrain.
