Book excerpt: "'I Love XXX' premiered in Beijing on 26 December 1994 with six unadvertised performances in a small space at the China Acrobat Troupe. A subsequent public run at the Haidian Theatre in May 1995 was halted due to the absence of a performance permit. Three months later, without securing permission from his official work unit (Central Experimental Theatre), Meng brought the production to the Tiny Alice Festival in Tokyo, Japan. As in many of Meng's productions, the actors were from a variety of local institutions, and several would continue to work with him, most notably Guo Tao. The play has been published in Chinese in an anthology of Meng's plays, and video of the production is included in DVD collections of his works."--
