Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982. This book is a collection of specially commissioned papers by writers who are closely involved in education management as practitioners, researchers and trainers. It provides readers with an insight to some of the major theoretical considerations in managing educational institutions. It offers some guidelines for rethinking the nature of education management and the development of an appropriate rationale and philosophy. Readers will obtain a knowledge of humanistic approaches to education management and gain an understanding of how the complex organizations called schools and colleges etc. can be sensitively managed. Industrial perspectives are more sensitive to the needs of education than is often thought - frequently more insightful and concerned than those of theorists who have only educational experience.

Book excerpt: Educational institutions in which administrators, managers and teachers will be working in the late 1990's will be far different from those oftoday. Schools, which until recently were lagging behind in the implementation of information technology (IT) in their administration and management, are now attempting to close the gap. A massive and rapid computerization process in schools, school districts and throughout the other Ievels of the educational system, including universities, has made computers an integral part of the educational management scene. A computer on the desk of every educational management statT might become a reality in the near future. The term "IT" includes three main components: hardware, software - mainly management information systems (MIS)/decision support systems (DSS) and human factors. Presently, successful implementation depends on adequate software and on human factors. MIS/DSSs are being implemented with the aim of providing meaningful support for school employees in their daily activities, and to improve their performance, etfectiveness and efficiency. Much like at universities, usable and accessible school databases are being established, encompassing data on students, teachers, employees, classrooms, grade Ievels, courses, student achievements and behavior, school space, curriculum, finance, inventory, transportation, etc.

Concise and contextual information and guidance are vital, especially as leaders are pressured from all sides to manage their resources astutely. This new edition of Educational Resource Management: An International Perspective is an updated and globally conscious guide to all aspects of this key responsibility. Opening with a detailed overview of funding and resource management in public and private institutions, the book looks at the criteria by which the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity of educational resource management can be judged. It goes on to explore cost structures, budgets, and the principles of asset management through case studies that draw on practitioner experiences as well as the authors' own observations. Educational Resource Management concludes with a review of current tensions and points towards further study, providing a succinct yet comprehensive guide for school and college leaders.
