Owing to this disparity of opinion among botanists, and notwithstanding their labours, much yet remains to be said on this interesting subject. Our intention is to recapitulate the theories, true or false, of the authors who have preceded us, and having shown the value of the form er, and combated the latter, we shall add our own observa tions, and deduce from both a new explanation of several important parts of the ower.
