Book excerpt: This book collects Professor Atle Grahl-Madsen's essays on refugee law and policy in a single volume, including commentary on the principles of refugee law and on important refugee crisis situations. Arranged in chronological order, the compilation of work contains all the author's scholarly English language articles dedicated to the needs and rights of refugees and asylum seekers. The republication of these articles makes an important part of Atle Grahl-Madsen's written work more easily accessible than before. The objective of the book is to provide a new perspective on Grahl-Madsen's approach, his ideas and the results of his research and thinking. As the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mrs Sadako Ogata, has stated in the foreword: `The timelessness of Professor Grahl-Madsen's writings stems from his conscientious and comprehensive research and his clarity of thought as an analyst His dedication and precision should serve as both an inspiration and aspiration to all who work to defend the rights of the displaced.' The collection shows the extent and quality of Atle Grahl-Madsen's legacy in the field of refugee law and human rights, and demonstrates the diversity of the subject of international refugee law and its relevance to the world in which we live.

Book Synopsis Philanthropic Foundations at the League of Nations by : Ludovic Tournès

Download or read book Philanthropic Foundations at the League of Nations written by Ludovic Tournès. This book was released on 2022-03-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the relations between US philanthropic foundations (in particular the Rockefeller Foundation and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace) and the League of Nations. Generations of students and scholars have learned that the US, having played a key role in the creation of the League of Nations in 1919, did not join the organization and stood aloof from its activities during the whole interwar period. This book questions this idea and argues that, even though the US was not a de jure member of the League of Nations, the financial, human, and intellectual investment of foundations brought about the de facto integration of the US within the League system and also modified the latter’s architecture. The book describes the Americanization of the League and shows how it resulted from three strategies pursued throughout the interwar period: that of US foundations, that of the Secretariat, and that of the US federal government. The book also shows the limits of this Americanization and analyzes the role of the European experts in the coproduction of the postwar international order together with the US government. This book will be of interest to historians and political scientists, as well as undergraduate and graduate students in interdisciplinary programs of international relations.

Book Synopsis National Economies by : Christoph Kreutzmueller

Download or read book National Economies written by Christoph Kreutzmueller. This book was released on 2015-09-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about economics and racism: During World War I, the liberal global economic system, based on principles of free trade and most-favored nation treatment and negotiated in gold parities, collapsed for good. The disintegration and collapse of commerce eventually led to racist cleansing, expulsion and mass murder. Against this background, this book offers new perspectives on the racist fault-lines that appeared and deepened in European economies after the end of what was regarded as the Great War. At what point did people start to ostracize their neighbors economically because they thought they were of a different ethnic group? Who decided who was to be excluded? Where did the fault-lines open? Where did the boundaries lie? How were they defined – by law, or by common practice? How much extra time and money were people prepared to spend in order to do ostracize their neighbors? And what did that mean for the economy – and society – as such?
