Book excerpt: In today's world, environmental concerns are one of the most pressing issues. Human activities such as production and consumption, resource depletion, waste generation, and a host of other factors all have negative effects on the environment. Due to the aforementioned, the world is seeking for a cleaner and safer form of energy. Oil-exporting economies such as Nigeria, which rely heavily on fossil fuels for economic growth are likely to face greater disruption from this transition If the country does not diversify its economy. Nigeria has tried a variety of approaches and implemented a number of policies to address the country's electricity woes, but so far, the country has seen little progress. Many businesses have been forced to relocate to countries that are more environmentally friendly and developed as a result of these power issues. The subject of electricity and the energy sector in Nigeria is very intriguing, interesting and deserving of examination. Various scholars have researched the underlying drivers and causes of electricity problems in Nigeria. However, this paper seeks to address the impact of the global energy transition on the Nigerian power sector.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 65, Aston University, language: English, abstract: The slow and deteriorating performance of the electricity power sector over the last few decades triggered the Federal Government of Nigeria to embark on a power sector reform program. This study examines the impact of the power sector reform (restructuring and privatization) on the performance of the electricity sector in Nigeria over the past twenty-five (25) years. Relevant electricity indicators are used to access the performance changes in three significant period; pure state-ownership, transition (restructuring and unbundling) and full privatization of the sector. The study also assesses how the effect of the economic environment, regulatory governance and political climate/effectiveness within the period contributes to the improvements in the electricity sector. The results shows that privatization is associated with improvement in the technical efficiency, access to electricity, electricity consumption per capita and an increase in electricity tariff in the sector. Furthermore, the results highlight the significant relationship between regulatory governance and a robust economy on the performance changes observed in the power industry.
