Book Synopsis The Identity of the Professional Interpreter by : Alan James Runcieman

Download or read book The Identity of the Professional Interpreter written by Alan James Runcieman. This book was released on 2018-01-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines how higher education(HE) institutions construct ‘professional identities’ in the classroom, specifically how dominant discourses in institutions frame the social role, requisite skills and character required to practice a profession, and how students navigate these along their academic trajectories. This book is based on a longitudinal case study of a prestigious HE institution specialising in training professional interpreters. Adopting an innovative research approach, it investigates a community of aspiring professionals in a HE context by drawing on small story narrative analysis from an ethnographic perspective to provide emic insights into the student community and the development of their social identities. The findings (contextualised by examining the curricula of similar institutions worldwide) suggest that interpreter institutions might not be providing students with a clear and comprehensive picture of the interpreter profession, and not responding to its increasingly complex role in today’s society.

Book excerpt: The research then aimed at identifying those Discourses that played an important role in shaping the image of the professional interpreter's identity and how students navigated them in their first year in the institution. My analysis was ultimately directed at critiquing those Discourses, in order to make suggestions as to how the institution might better train students to become future interpreters.

Book Synopsis Identity and Status in the Translational Professions by : Rakefet Sela-Sheffy

Download or read book Identity and Status in the Translational Professions written by Rakefet Sela-Sheffy. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contributes to the emerging research on the social formation of translators and interpreters as specific occupational groups. Despite the rising academic interest in sociological perspectives in Translation Studies, relatively little research has so far been devoted to translators' social background, status struggles and sense of self. The articles assembled here zoom in on the “groups of individuals” who perform the complex translating and/or interpreting tasks, thereby creating their own space of cultural production. Cutting across varied translatorial and geographical arenas, they reflect a view of the interrelatedness between the macro-level question of professional status and micro-level aspects of practitioners' identity. Addressing central theoretical issues relating to translators' habitus and role perception, as well as methodological challenges of using qualitative and quantitative measures, this endeavor also contributes to the critical discourse on translators' agency and ethics and to questions of reformulating their social role. The contributions to this volume were originally published in Translation and Interpreting Studies 4:2 (2009) and 5:1 (2010).
