The rides and attractions of theme parks are often based on “a central theme”. Theme parks often feature a multitude of “areas with disparate themes”. Competitors in the theme park industry are aptly poised to have lucrative and auspicious futures as more tourists visit theme parks and as the popular franchise-based attractions of theme parks garner more interest worldwide among customers. “The global amusement parks market size was valued at $45,200,000,000 in 2017” (“Amusement Parks Market,” 2018). “Amusement Parks market size is set to grow at a compound annual growth of 6.2% during 2020-2025, projected to reach $72,440,000,000 by 2025” (“Amusement Parks Market,” n.d.). There are a multitude of reasons as to why the theme park industry is projected to expand in the pending future. “Innovative rides, accommodation facilities, and merchandise in amusement parks are gaining popularity among visitors of all age groups. As a result, there is a rise in the number of adults and children visiting amusement parks, thus expanding the size of the target audience. Sale of merchandise and food and beverages through retail outlets and restaurants located inside the amusement parks are anticipated to be the key sources of ancillary revenue for amusement parks. Additionally, increasing urban population, international tourism, and rising disposable income of middle-class population are providing an upthrust to the amusement park market worldwide” (“Amusement Parks Market,” 2018). There are ample factors that are able to accelerate the growth of the behemoth theme park industry. The rapid growth of the global population can also contribute to the robust growth of the theme park industry. Theme parks are replete with franchise-based attractions that manage to garner interest worldwide among customers. Theme parks allow people to experience unalloyed excitement and provide a thrilling divertissement which causes people to divert their attention away from dwelling on stressors. In the coming years, more virtual reality technologies will be apt to be ushered into theme parks. Virtual reality technologies can be utilized (“How Technological Advancements,” n.d.) in order to render “rides more entertaining and immersive, transporting riders to a world entirely separate from their own. Virtual reality technologies allow theme park owners to revitalize existing rides and create a brand-new experience through a software update instead of an overhaul of physical infrastructure” (“How Technological Advancements,” n.d.). Virtual reality technologies can allow existing rides to become all the more immersive, engrossing, and dynamic. It is possible for theme park companies to furnish customers with a robust virtual reality experience without the customers needing to wear bulky virtual reality headsets to experience virtual reality. Virtual reality technologies can allow creative theme park ride designers to eminently revamp rides to the extent that the customer feels as though they have been transported into a vibrant fantasy world. Ample “rides at Universal Studios Hollywood, for instance, already feature HD and 3D screens that create an immersive ride experience without the hassle of a headset” (“How Technological Advancements,” n.d.). It stands to preponderantly reason that the future of the theme park industry will be apt to feature more virtual reality rides for customers to indulge in experiencing. In the coming years, more augmented reality technologies will be apt to be ushered into theme parks. Augmented reality technologies are able to digitize the real world by “overlaying digital elements on top of the real world” (“How Technological Advancements,” n.d.).

As this technology continues to proliferate, the next step is giving robots the ability to apply these things to learn on their own. For example, a robot can currently be programmed to pick up and place items, but in the future, it will combine machine vision with machine learning to figure out its own programming through trial and error" (Davids, 2018). By leveraging machine learning and machine vision robots will be capable of seamlessly learning anything complex. In the coming decades, advancements will be made in the areas of machine learning, machine vision, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and robotic mobility. In the coming years, the robotics industry will also give rise to more collaborative robots which will work alongside human laborers. "This reflects the focus of the industry towards creating robots that are simpler, easier to program, and able to integrate into current processes. To make these robots safe, there is a large market for safety sensors that ensure humans can work alongside the robots without any significant risks. Machine vision will contribute to this as well, offering robots the ability to 'see' when someone is in their workspace" (Davids, 2018). Human will work alongside collaborative robots in order to be able to complete tasks more efficiently and productivity through sequential collaboration efforts. The future of the robots industry is not limited to advancements in collaborative robots, such as hand guiding collaborative robots or "speed and separation" ("What are the," 2019) collaborative robots. "The future will continue to enhance technologies, such as 3D embedded vision, multispectral, and hyperspectral imaging. This, combined with artificial intelligence and deep learning, will empower industrial robots to improve themselves and keep pace with the human workers around them" (Davids, 2018). In the coming decades, robots will have the capability to outperform human laborers in every facet a job as they become more technologically advanced. Robots will not only be able to teach themselves how to perform cumbersome tasks, but will also be able to incessantly work without taking breaks nor making errors. Robots can also work around the clock without succumbing to fatigue and can also work in a lights out environment with air conditioning. Beyond collaborative robots becoming more prevalently leveraged by companies in the pending years, industrial robots will also be utilized more by companies in the coming years. "The industrial robot industry for instance is expected to grow 175% over the next nine years and will result in more competition and innovation" (Davids, 2018).

Book excerpt: This descriptive study conducts basic research to create an original analysis of the possible disruptive impact of game design, mobile devices, social networking and emerging media technologies on location-based entertainment (LBE), specifically theme parks. This study employs the Delphi Method to identify where disruptions might occur to better understand how the emergences of these technologies affect the theme park industry. Game design, mobile technology, social networks, and emerging media receive special attention. Audience, business, non-technological forces, and design are also reviewed. It was anticipated that these specific technologies have an impact and are fundamentally disrupting theme parks. A panel of theme park experts participated in the Delphi study to explore possible disruptive technologies that may be affecting theme parks, in qualities such as interactivity, immersion, personalization, mobility, shareability, sociability, digitzation, connectivity, repeatability, and extendibility. Consensuses in changes are identified. Ultimately to answer the question: are theme parks being disrupted by new technologies? What was found was a rich and detailed spectrum of various positions that each respondent shares. At this time, it was found that generally theme parks are not being disrupted by technological innovation to the point they have lose control over their design and business models at this time, but they are indeed changing. Rather theme parks are being continually forced to change along a trajectory that they already embrace by seeking novel entertainments to add to their experiences. Generally that change is positive, and not a negative painful restructuring that other industries have faced since the advent of the aforementioned technologies. Although these technologies are sustaining theme parks rather than disrupting them, it is acknowledged that these technologies do have potential for disruption. This continuous change does have various implications for theme parks. This study finds what some of those changes are. A significant tend is that interactivity is increasing, thus the experience is shifting from a passive experience to an active one. Mobile devices, social networks and Internet connectivity combined together are significant forces acting upon the theme park experience. There is an increased emphasis on personalization and customization. A disconnect exists between how social networks technologies are currently utilized and with the potential that those digital social connections represent. As new technologies change in society, those changes are also reflected in the expectations of theme park audiences. Theme parks fundamentally remain a place for people to come for a shared, social, group experience. Fundamentally, technologies remain tools that invisibly support the theme park story and experience, but are not the main attractions. As illustrated here, there are various implications for new technologies as they drive change forward for theme parks.
