Book Synopsis The Fourth Frontier by : Thomas Addington

Download or read book The Fourth Frontier written by Thomas Addington. This book was released on 2000-10-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical American spends 80,000 to 100,000 of his or her best hours at work. For many, those hours are spent without a sense of purpose, meaning, or passion. But it doesn't have to be that way. For followers of Jesus, work is not just something we have to do. It's an opportunity to enter into deep participation in the life and work of the living God--a vital, unique, and powerful dimension of an abundant life in Christ. But many followers of Christ are uninformed or misinformed when it comes to what the Bible teaches about work. Through extensive research, consulting, mentoring, and interviewing, co-authors Thomas Addington and Stephen Graves have found that few followers of Jesus realize how much the Bible has to say about all the decisions, dilemmas, deals, and duties inherent in everyday work. From handling change to handling trauma, from creating a strategic plan to managing a staff dispute, from establishing travel policies to dealing with a dishonest supervisor, biblical truth is relevant, applicable, and discernable in workplace issues. The Fourth Frontier is for you if you're longing to: Understand God's personal calling for your life. Experience a sense of satisfaction and a God-connection to your job. Use your God-given skills for His kingdom while you're at work. Feel passion, peace, and purpose about your time between 8 and 5. Avoid the fears and anxieties that strangle joy for most employees. Create a supportive synergy between your family and your work life. Feel balance in all areas of your life. Followers of Jesus need not live fragmented, imbalanced, frenetic lives of conflicting demands and polarized priorities. Embark on a journey into The Fourth Frontier and embark on a journey of learning what it means to live a Christ-centered life of devotion, integrity, stewardship, and rest-and learning to be salt and light in the workplace and the world.

Book Synopsis The Urban West at the End of the Frontier by : Lawrence H. Larsen

Download or read book The Urban West at the End of the Frontier written by Lawrence H. Larsen. This book was released on 2021-10-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have largely ignored the western city; although a number of specialized studies have appeared in recent years, this volume is the first to assess the importance of the urban frontier in broad fashion. Lawrence H. Larsen studies the process of urbanization as it occurred in twenty-four major frontier towns. Cities examined are Kansas City, St. Joseph, Lincoln, Omaha, Atchison, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Topeka, Austin, Dallas, Galveston, Houston, San Antonio, Denver, Leadville, Salt Lake City, Virginia City, Portland, Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, and Stockton. Larsen bases his analysis of western cities and their problems on social statistics obtained from the 1880 United States Census. This census is particularly important because it represents the first time that the federal government regarded the United States as an urban nation. The author is the first scholar to do a comprehensive investigation of this important source. This volume gives an accurate portrayal of western urban life. Here are promoters and urban planners crowding as many lots as possible into tracts in the middle of vast, uninhabited valleys. Here are streets clogged with filth because of inadequate sanitation systems; people crowded together in packed quarters with only fledgling police and fire services. Here, too, is the advance of nineteenth-century technology: gaslights, telephones, interurbans. Most important, this study dispels the misconceptions concerning the process of exploration, settlement, and growth of the urban west. City building in the American West, despite popular mythology, was not a response to geographic or climatic conditions. It was the extension of a process perfected earlier, the promotion and building of sites—no matter how undesirable—into successful localities. Uncontrolled capitalism led to disorderly development that reflected the abilities of individual entrepreneurs rather than most other factors. The result was the establishment of a society that mirrored and made the same mistakes as those made earlier in the rest of the country.

Book Synopsis Transforming the Frontier by : Bram Büscher

Download or read book Transforming the Frontier written by Bram Büscher. This book was released on 2013-04-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International peace parks—transnational conservation areas established and managed by two or more countries—have become a popular way of protecting biodiversity while promoting international cooperation and regional development. In Transforming the Frontier, Bram Büscher shows how cross-border conservation neatly reflects the neoliberal political economy in which it developed. Based on extensive research in southern Africa with the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation and Development Project, Büscher explains how the successful promotion of transfrontier conservation as a "win-win" solution happens not only in spite of troubling contradictions and problems, but indeed because of them. This is what he refers to as the "politics of neoliberal conservation," which receives its strength from effectively combining strategies of consensus, antipolitics, and marketing. Drawing on long-term, multilevel ethnographic research, Büscher argues that transfrontier conservation projects are not as concerned with on-the-ground development as they are purported to be. Instead, they are reframing environmental protection and sustainable development to fit an increasingly contradictory world order.
