Book Synopsis The Force of Truth by : Daniele Lorenzini

Book excerpt: "It has become fashionable in certain intellectual circles to trace our present of alternative facts and denialism back to Foucault and what critics claim to be the way he undermines the stable notion of truth. In The Force of Truth, Daniele Lorenzini explains why this understanding of Foucault stems from a fundamental misreading of his work. Foucault was not interested in defining what truth is, nor in elaborating or defending a specific theory of truth. Instead, Lorenzini shows, Foucault's project of a history of truth aims to trace the genealogy of the main regimes of truth that have emerged throughout human history and are relevant for us today. In this fundamental re-reading of Foucault's critical project as a whole, The Force of Truth provides a new understanding of Foucault's history of truth and a clear statement on one of the most pressing matters concerning Foucault's legacy. Foucault does not reduce the question of truth to a purely logical or epistemological question, or to the philosophical task of elaborating a definition or theory of truth; he constantly asks us to be surprised by the proliferation of true discourses throughout human history, and never to take for granted their emergence and existence"--

Book Synopsis The Force Born of Truth by : Betsy Kuhn

Book excerpt: Gandhi's Salt March united all Indians in peaceful protest for independence. Yet British forces met them with violence and imprisonment. In this story of India's struggle for freedom, we'll learn how Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent action overpowered the British government. And we'll witness how Gandhi's actions influenced civil rights movements around the world. "With this salt, I am rocking the foundations of an Empire."―Mohandas Gandhi, 1930 On April 6, 1930, Mohandas Gandhi stood on the coast of the Arabian Sea in western India. He and his followers had walked 241 miles (388 kilometers) to reach this place. Now, at the end of their long journey, Gandhi made a simple gesture marking the beginning of a revolution: he reached down, grabbed a clump of sea salt, and raised it overhead. This signaled to all Indians to embark on a course of civil disobedience―making and selling their own salt. At this time, India had been ruled by the British Empire for more than 200 years. The British had taken control of India's main industries, including its highly profitable salt manufacturing process. By law, Indians were not allowed to produce their own salt―or to even pick up a lump of sea salt. Everyone in India, no matter how poor, paid a salt tax to the British government.

Book Synopsis Post-Truth by : Steve Fuller

Download or read book Post-Truth written by Steve Fuller. This book was released on 2018-05-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Post-truth’ was Oxford Dictionaries 2016 word of the year. While the term was coined by its disparagers in the light of the Brexit and US presidential campaigns, the roots of post-truth lie deep in the history of Western social and political theory. Post-Truth reaches back to Plato, ranging across theology and philosophy, to focus on the Machiavellian tradition in classical sociology, as exemplified by Vilfredo Pareto, who offered the original modern account of post-truth in terms of the ‘circulation of elites’. The defining feature of ‘post-truth’ is a strong distinction between appearance and reality which is never quite resolved and so the strongest appearance ends up passing for reality. The only question is whether more is gained by rapid changes in appearance or by stabilizing one such appearance. Post-Truth plays out what this means for both politics and science.
