Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fithian: The First Hundred Years, 1870-1970 Centuries later, as the climate warmed and the mountainous range of ice began to melt back, the leading edge retreated slowly from near Cairo, Illinois, over Vermilion County and back through Canada to the Arctic Circle. But as it receded, melting at fairly even rates, all the frozen debris was deposited like an unrolling carpet behind it. Occasionally, the rate would slow, and the edge would stay in one spot briefly. Then a low rill of land would build up as the material melted out. That happened just north of Fithian, and we see it today in a low and moderate ridge stretching west from Indiana through the glenburn-newton area into Champaign County, the Champaign Moraine.
