Book excerpt: Epigenetic maternal effects are being studied in laboratories at an exponentially increasing rate and have routinely been found to have consequences on the physiological and behavioural function of mammalian offspring. Despite this wealth of knowledge, our understanding of how epigenetic maternal effects impact free-living animals within natural ecosystems is comparatively non-existent. Here, I examine laboratory epigenetic maternal effects literature from the last decade with a perspective informed by an eco-evolutionary framework and found that the type and timing of maternal effects influences the extent of offspring DNA methylation in mammals. Additionally, I use an innovative experimental field manipulation to assess the epigenetic maternal effects of stress in free-living North American red squirrels and found inherent sex-specific differences in Nr3c1 and Pomc gene expression of red squirrel offspring despite no effect of maternal stress. Together, these studies highlight the importance of integrating evolutionary, ecophysiological, and molecular theory when studying epigenetic maternal effects.

Book Synopsis Environmental Epigenetics by : L. Joseph Su

Download or read book Environmental Epigenetics written by L. Joseph Su. This book was released on 2015-05-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the toxicological and health implications of environmental epigenetics and provides knowledge through an interdisciplinary approach. Included in this volume are chapters outlining various environmental risk factors such as phthalates and dietary components, life states such as pregnancy and ageing, hormonal and metabolic considerations and specific disease risks such as cancer cardiovascular diseases and other non-communicable diseases. Environmental Epigenetics imparts integrative knowledge of the science of epigenetics and the issues raised in environmental epidemiology. This book is intended to serve both as a reference compendium on environmental epigenetics for scientists in academia, industry and laboratories and as a textbook for graduate level environmental health courses. Book Synopsis Maternal Effects in Mammals by : Dario Maestripieri

Download or read book Maternal Effects in Mammals written by Dario Maestripieri. This book was released on 2009-08-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary maternal effects occur whenever a mother’s phenotypic traits directly affect her offspring’s phenotype, independent of the offspring’s genotype. Some of the phenotypic traits that result in maternal effects have a genetic basis, whereas others are environmentally determined. For example, the size of a litter produced by a mammalian mother—a trait with a strong genetic basis—can affect the growth rate of her offspring, while a mother’s dominance rank—an environmentally determined trait—can affect the dominance rank of her offspring. The first volume published on the subject in more than a decade, Maternal Effects in Mammals reflects advances in genomic, ecological, and behavioral research, as well new understandings of the evolutionary interplay between mothers and their offspring. Dario Maestripieri and Jill M. Mateo bring together a learned group of contributors to synthesize the vast literature on a range of species, highlight evolutionary processes that were previously overlooked, and propose new avenues of research. Maternal Effects in Mammals will serve as the most comprehensive compendium on and stimulus for interdisciplinary treatments of mammalian maternal effects.

Book Synopsis Neurobiology of Social Behavior by : Michael Numan

Download or read book Neurobiology of Social Behavior written by Michael Numan. This book was released on 2014-07-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social neuroscience is a rapidly growing, interdisciplinary field which is devoted to understanding how social behavior is regulated by the brain, and how such behaviors in turn influence brain and biology. Existing volumes either fail to take a neurobiological approach or focus on one particular type of behavior, so the field is ripe for a comprehensive reference which draws cross-behavioral conclusions. This authored work will serve as the market’s most comprehensive reference on the neurobiology of social behavior. The volume will offer an introduction to neural systems and genetics/epigenetics, followed by detailed study of a wide range of behaviors – aggression, sex and sexual differentiation, mating, parenting, social attachments, monogamy, empathy, cooperation, and altruism. Research findings on the neural basis of social behavior will be integrated across different levels of analysis, from molecular neurobiology to neural systems/behavioral neuroscience to fMRI imaging data on human social behavior. Chapters will cover research on both normal and abnormal behaviors, as well as developmental aspects. 2016 PROSE Category winner - Honorable Mention for Biomedicine and Neuroscience Presents neurobiological analysis of the full spectrum of social behaviors, while other volumes focus on one particular behavior Integrates and discusses research from different levels of analysis, including molecular/genetic, neural circuits and systems, and fMRI imaging research Covers both normal and abnormal behaviors Covers aggression, sex and sexual differentiation, mating, parenting, social attachments, empathy, cooperation, and altruism
