Book Synopsis Energy and Cost Efficient Data Centers by : Baris Aksanli

Download or read book Energy and Cost Efficient Data Centers written by Baris Aksanli. This book was released on 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data centers need efficient energy management mechanisms to reduce their consumption, energy costs and the resulting negative grid and environmental effects. Many of the state of the art mechanisms come with performance overhead, which may lead to service level agreement violations and reduce the quality of service. This thesis proposes novel methods that meet quality of service targets while decreasing energy costs and peak power of data centers. We leverage short term prediction of green energy as a part of our novel data center job scheduler to significantly increase the green energy efficiency and job throughput. We extend this analysis to distributed data centers connected with a backbone network. As a part of this work, we devise a green energy aware routing algorithm for the network, thus reducing its carbon footprint. Consumption during peak periods is an important issue for data centers due to its high cost. Peak shaving allows data centers to increase their computational capacity without exceeding a given power budget. We leverage battery-based solutions because they incur no performance overhead. We first show that when using an idealized battery model, peak shaving benefits can be overestimated by 3.35x. We then present a distributed control mechanism for a more realistic battery system that achieves 10x lower communication overhead than the centralized solution. We also demonstrate a new battery placement architecture that outperforms existing designs with better peak shaving and battery lifetime, and doubles the savings. Data centers are also good candidates for providing ancillary services in the power markets due to their large power consumption and flexibility. This thesis develops a framework that explores the feasibility of data center participation in these markets, focusing specifically on regulation services. We use a battery-based design to not only help by providing ancillary services, but to also limit peak power costs without any workload performance degradation.

Book Synopsis Multi Objective Optimization for Energy Efficiency in Small and Medium Scale Data Centers by : Deepika T

Download or read book Multi Objective Optimization for Energy Efficiency in Small and Medium Scale Data Centers written by Deepika T. This book was released on 2024-02-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relentless ascent of the cloud computing paradigm has garnered focused attention in the framework of industry 4.0. Nowadays, Cloud computing services are being used by 70% of business organizations, except 10% more organizations contrived to utilize it. As a result, 4000 data centers are the estimated need over the next decade to accompany 400 million servers. In 2013, the projected energy utilization of United States data centers was 91 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to a yearly yield of 34 huge (500-megawatt) coal-fired power plants, sufficient to provide electricity to all households in New York City for two years. Consequently, in the next few years, this is expected to escalate to approximately 140 billion kilowatts per hour; it emits almost 150 million carbon emission metrics annually. Specifically, Amazon expends nearly half its administration financial plan to control and cool the server farms. Additionally, excessive power utilization increases system temperature and escalates every 10◦C tends to double the failure rate of electronic devices. The data center's power utilization will foresee (3- 13)% of worldwide electricity usage in 2030. The worldwide power utilization of the Hyper-Scale Data Centers (HSDCs) is 5%, while the Small and Medium-Scale Data Centers (SMSDCs) consumed the rest of the 95%. The U.S established nearly 5.17 million servers (40%) in SMSDCs. In recent days, the SMSDCs furnished with high computing utilities tend to influence server power utilization. Therefore, this calls for identifying the monitoring and control measures to curtail power utilization and minimize the carbon footprint in SMSDCs. A cloud data center is associated with a group of connected Physical Machines (PMs) or hosts used by organizations for network processing, remote storage, and access to enormous data. The data centers are the backbone of the cloud environments. The virtualization technique plays a significant role in the data centers - facilitates sharing resources among customers through Virtual Machines (VMs). The IaaS layer uses virtualization technology to create VMs, consolidate work-loads, and facilitate the delivery of computational resources to end-users. The industry 4.0 environment encompasses the extensive growth of big data applications and the pervasive Internet of Things technology. Data centers are central to the current modern industrial business world. Therefore, almost 80 % of business organizations are contriving to transform to cloud computing technology, promising to enhance the business functionality. Extensive enhancements in the SMSDC infrastructure comprise a diverse set of connected devices that disseminate resources to the end users.

Book Synopsis Energy Consumption and Savings in Indonesian Resort Hotels by : Jan Sternstein

Download or read book Energy Consumption and Savings in Indonesian Resort Hotels written by Jan Sternstein. This book was released on 2011-10-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Energy Sciences, grade: 1,3, University of Flensburg (Energy and Environmental Management), course: Energy and Environmental Management - Industrial, language: English, abstract: Energy consultations were conducted in Indonesian resort hotels to get a deep insight into current energy practices and to develop improvement measures on a technical level. Soaring energy prices and a trend towards sustainable tourism in Indonesia make energy consumption an urgent question of business profitability in hotels. The research presents common consumption practices of small to large resorts and points out wasteful processes. As a guide for decision makers and engineers in the hotels a catalogue with improvement measures was developed, fitted to the Indonesian climate and energy market conditions. Energy efficient and renewable warm water supply solutions are assessed with dynamic economic methods and backed with sensitivity analyses, pointing out highly attractive investments and indicating a market for technology suppliers. Further innovative concepts for the exploitation of waste energy or renewable sources in resort hotels are discussed. The research reveals need for action and concludes with a set of key recommendations for decision makers in hotels.
