The factors considered were: student and teacher perceptions, success rate, grade point average, behavioral referrals, and suspensions. The fundamental components included learning environment, online courses, and academic achievement. An evaluation of an alternative school program was completed using both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The students and teachers completed surveys and interviews. Additionally archival data including student tests results and behavioral referrals were reviewed. There is little research regarding the use online education for at-risk students in an alternative school. This study explores the possibility of establishing such a program. The general findings suggested that students need to possess the necessary motivation and academic skills in order to be successful in the alternative learning environment. Analysis of the data showed there was some degree of improvement in behavior and academic success which may in part be the result of the type of online courses that were used. The dialogue that occurred throughout the study provided good insight into online education in relation to behavior, motivation and academic success.
