Book Synopsis The Edwardian Picture Postcard as a Communications Revolution by : Julia Gillen

Book excerpt: This monograph offers a novel investigation of the Edwardian picture postcard as an innovative form of multimodal communication, revealing much about the creativity, concerns and lives of those who used postcards as an almost instantaneous form of communication. In the early twentieth century, the picture postcard was a revolutionary way of combining short messages with an image, making use of technologies in a way impossible in the decades since, until the advent of the digital revolution. This book offers original insights into the historical and social context in which the Edwardian picture postcard emerged and became a craze. It also expands the field of Literacy Studies by illustrating the combined use of posthuman, multimodal, historic and linguistic methodologies to conduct an in-depth analysis of the communicative, sociolinguistic and relational functions of the postcard. Particular attention is paid to how study of the picture postcard can reveal details of the lives and literacy practices of often overlooked sectors of the population, such as working-class women. The Edwardian era in the United Kingdom was one of extreme inequalities and rapid social change, and picture postcards embodied the dynamism of the times. Grounded in an analysis of a unique, open access, digitized collection of 3,000 picture postcards, this monograph will be of interest to researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of Literacy Studies, sociolinguistics, history of communications and UK social history.

Book Synopsis The Picture Postcard by : Ann Wilson

Download or read book The Picture Postcard written by Ann Wilson. This book was released on 2021. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Picture Postcard, a new window into Edwardian Ireland uses the material culture of the picture postcard as a lens through which to examine life on the island of Ireland during the Edwardian period (1902-10). Picture postcards became extremely popular worldwide at the start of the twentieth century, when literally hundreds of billions of them were produced and sold. People collected and gifted them because they were visually attractive, cheap and accessible, and they also used them for all sorts of fast and convenient communication. In Ireland, as elsewhere, they became ubiquitous and unavoidable, and were consumed and used by all sorts of people, even those who did not engage with other media. A large part of their appeal was that they allowed individuals for the first time to customize ready-made and constantly updated imagery and text with their own messages, in ways similar to current communications via social media. This book uses postcard collections to access the everyday lives of people who rarely make it into conventional historical narratives, and to make connections in an Irish context between their 'small histories' and broader, well-studied discourses such as identity, nationalism, empire, modernity, emigration, tourism and the roles of women"--

Book Synopsis Food Marketing and Selling Healthy Lifestyles with Science by : Lauren Alex O'Hagan

Download or read book Food Marketing and Selling Healthy Lifestyles with Science written by Lauren Alex O'Hagan. This book was released on 2024-09-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to historicise our understanding of contemporary trends by studying the long relationship between science, food and drink marketing and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. It aims to bring together contemporary and historical research from a multimodal perspective, considering how scientific discourse and ideas about health and nutrition are channelled through visual and material culture. Using examples of advertisements, commercials and posters, the 16 chapters in this book will foster a cross-disciplinary and cross-temporal dialogue, uncovering links between past and present ways that manufacturers have capitalised upon scientific innovations to create new products or rebrand existing products and employed science to make claims about health and nutrition. They will, thus, demonstrate the continuity of science in food and drink marketing—even if fundamental ideas of nutrition have evolved over time. The book provides crucial new insights into the significance of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a period of innovation in food and drink marketing and showcasing how many of the marketing strategies employed today, in fact, have a far broader historical trajectory. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of Critical Food Studies, Media and Communication Studies, History of Science and Medicine and Cultural Studies, as well as nutritionists, dieticians, sportspeople, in addition to policymakers and practitioners working in the area of food and drink marketing.

Book Synopsis Open Letters by : Alison Rowley

Download or read book Open Letters written by Alison Rowley. This book was released on 2013-12-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the fin-de-siècle and early revolutionary eras, picture postcards were an important medium of communication for Russians of all backgrounds. In Open Letters, the most comprehensive study of Russian picture postcards to date, Alison Rowley uses this medium to explore a variety of aspects of Russian popular culture. The book is lavishly illustrated with more than 130 images, most of which have never been published before. Through her examinations of postcards, Rowley addresses a diverse range of topics: how landscape postcards conveyed notions of imperialism; the role of postcards in the rise of celebrity culture; depictions of the body on erotic and pornographic postcards; how postcards were employed to promote differing interpretations of the First World War; and the use of postcards by revolutionary groups seeking to overthrow the Tsarist government. Rowley determines the extent to which Russia was embedded in Europe-wide cultural trends by situating the Russian case within a larger European context.
