Book Synopsis The Dynamite Conspiracy by : Arelo C. Sederberg

Download or read book The Dynamite Conspiracy written by Arelo C. Sederberg. This book was released on 2001. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamite Conspiracy is a narrative-driven retelling of the bombing of the anti-Union Los Angeles Times by Union Terrorists in 1910. The attack killed 20 people. After a six-month search by a bulldog detective, William Burns, the two conspirators were caught and put on trial in Los Angeles. The era’s top defense attorney, Clarence Darrow, who was hired by Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor, defended them. Darrow eventually pleaded his clients guilty to save them from execution. He was himself put on trail, however, on a charge of jury bribery. After a sensational three-month trial defended by the legendary Earl Roger, Darrow was exonerated, returned to Chicago, and went on to bigger cases.

Book Synopsis Improvised Explosive Devices by : James Revill

Download or read book Improvised Explosive Devices written by James Revill. This book was released on 2016-07-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with an account of the evolution of improvised explosive devices using a number of micro case studies to explore how and why actors have initiated IED campaigns; how new and old technologies and expertise have been exploited and how ethical barriers to IED development and deployment have been dealt with. It proceeds to bring the evidence from the case studies together to identify themes and trends in IED development, before looking at what can realistically be done to mitigate the threat of IEDs in the new wars of the twenty first century. The book suggests that the advance and availability of a combination of technological factors, in conjunction with changes in the nature of contemporary conflicts, have led to the emergence of IEDs as the paradigmatic weapons of new wars. However their prevalence in contemporary and future conflicts is not inevitable, but rather depends on the willingness of multiple sets of actors at different levels to build a web of preventative measures to mitigate – if not eradicate – IED development and deployment.

Book Synopsis The Irish-American Dynamite Campaign by : Joseph McKenna

Download or read book The Irish-American Dynamite Campaign written by Joseph McKenna. This book was released on 2014-01-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1880s, Clan-na-Gael, an extremist Irish-American organization that succeeded the Fenian Brotherhood, initiated a dynamite campaign against Britain in a bid to bring about Irish independence. Throughout England, explosions rocked government, military and police targets, including the Tower of London, London Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. This detailed study chronicles the origins, operations and aftereffects of the campaign, especially its heavy infiltration by spies, informers and agents of a rogue British Secret Service. By exploring the overlooked areas of the operation's history, this volume reveals how, in a bid to discredit the Irish National Party in Parliament, those most entrusted with Britain`s security were themselves complicit in the bombings.
