Download or read book THE DIARY OF AN UNREASONABLE MAN written by Madhav Mathur. This book was released on 2009-11-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pranav Kumar is: (a) An advertising executive (b) An aspiring writer (c) An anarchist (d) A fugitive from the Mumbai Police (e) All of the above Pranav Kumar has had enough. He’s sick and tired of being a corporate drone convincing people that their lives are meaningless without the newest product he’s peddling. He hates that commercialism is the new mantra and people actually believe that you are what you own. Pranav Kumar wants to change the world. But how does one man make a whole country question the way we are when no one is interested in listening? Pranav and his friends decide to capture the eyeballs of the nation and shake up the system. Their methods are unorthodox; their message unique. They take over a TV station; expose an environmental scam; strike out at patrons of brothels; sabotage a glitzy fashion show; and paint-bomb a local train. But as the Anarchists of Mumbai ignite sparks of a much larger movement; they realize that doing good comes at a price; that the means are as important as the ends and that being hunted by the Mumbai police is perhaps better than being hunted by contract-killers. Bold; fresh and darkly comic; The Diary of an Unreasonable Man is an exceptional debut.

Book Synopsis Diary of an Eco-Outlaw by : Diane Wilson

Download or read book Diary of an Eco-Outlaw written by Diane Wilson. This book was released on 2011-04-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diane Wilson is an activist, shrimper, and all around hell-raiser whose first book, An Unreasonable Woman, told of her battle to save her bay in Seadrift, Texas. Back then, she was an accidental activist who worked with whistleblowers, organized protests, and eventually sunk her own boat to stop the plastic-manufacturing giant Formosa from releasing dangerous chemicals into water she shrimped in, grew up on, and loved. But, it turns out, the fight against Formosa was just the beginning. In Diary of an Eco-Outlaw, Diane writes about what happened as she began to fight injustice not just in Seadrift, but around the world-taking on Union Carbide for its failure to compensate those injured in the Bhopal disaster, cofounding the women's antiwar group Code Pink to protest the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, attempting a citizens arrest of Dick Cheney, famously covering herself with fake oil and demanding the arrest of then BP CEO Tony Hayward as he testified before Congress, and otherwise becoming a world-class activist against corporate injustice, war, and environmental crimes. As George Bernard Shaw once said, "all progress depends on unreasonable women." And in the Diary of an Eco-Outlaw, the eminently unreasonable Wilson delivers a no-holds-barred account of how she-a fourth-generation shrimper, former boat captain, and mother of five-took a turn at midlife, unable to stand by quietly as she witnessed abuses of people and the environment. Since then, she has launched legislative campaigns, demonstrations, and hunger strikes-and generally gotten herself in all manner of trouble. All worth it, says Wilson. Jailed more than 50 times for civil disobedience, Wilson has stood up for environmental justice, and peace, around the world-a fact that has earned her many kudos from environmentalists and peace activists alike, and that has forced progress where progress was hard to come by.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimee Mayne was born into a life of apparent privilege and opportunity. However, as a woman born in 1872 and living through the first half of the twentieth century, these opportunities were severely limited by law, culture and tradition. This story is of a woman of the British upper-middle-class, whose life was full of colour – of living in India; of family relationships; of travel; of the Blitz. She kept diaries, and wrote an intimate memoir. This book explores her emotional conflicts, with a revealing analysis that includes revelations about a woman brought up in the late-Victorian period, encompassing her sex-life and the turmoil of an unhappy marriage. It is a study of a life that identifies how an upper-middle-class upbringing that included an attempted tertiary education, at a time when this was unheard of for most women, induced her into a marriage and life-style that was the antithesis of her early aspirations. Her life was to engender a sense of grievance that embittered relations with her family. While she took advantage of her travels to undertake a successful lecturing career, personal fulfilment was only to be found at the end of her life during the London Blitz in World War Two.
