Book Synopsis The Development of the Grammatical System in Early Second Language Acquisition by : Anke Lenzing

Download or read book The Development of the Grammatical System in Early Second Language Acquisition written by Anke Lenzing. This book was released on 2013-08-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Christopher Brumfit Award in Applied Linguistics. The Development of the Grammatical System in Early Second Language Acquisition focuses on the acquisition process of early L2 learners. It is based on the following key hypothesis: the initial mental grammatical system of L2 learners is constrained semantically, syntactically and mnemonically. This hypothesis is formalised as the Multiple Constraints Hypothesis. The empirical test of the Multiple Constraints Hypothesis is based on a large database including cross-sectional and longitudinal data from square-one ESL beginners. The study demonstrates that the postulated constraints are relaxed successively as learning progresses. The book is intended for postgraduate students as well as SLA researchers.

Book Synopsis Grammatical Development in Language Learning by : Robert Dekeyser

Download or read book Grammatical Development in Language Learning written by Robert Dekeyser. This book was released on 2005-04-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is learning the grammar of a second language difficult? The present volume brings together insights from leading researchers, published in the past five years of the journal Language Learning, to identify the multiple factors that combine to challenge learners in attaining full proficiency in a second language. An innovative synthesis of recent research on grammar and second language acquisition. Highlights the importance of transparency in form-meaning relations as well as learners' aptitudes and previous language learning experiences. Shows how diminutives facilitate gender acquisition in Russian. Demonstrates how learners make semantic distinctions in acquiring gender distinction in French. Evaluates the role of phonological short-term memory in the acquisition of gender in a semi-artificial linguistic system. A useful collection for a graduate seminar on psycholinguistic aspects of second language acquisition.

Book Synopsis Grammatical development in second languages. Exploring the boundaries of Processability Theory by : Camilla Bettoni

Download or read book Grammatical development in second languages. Exploring the boundaries of Processability Theory written by Camilla Bettoni. This book was released on 2015-08-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processability Theory is Manfred Pienemann's highly cited psycholinguistic theory of Second Language Acquisition offering a transitional paradigm that accounts specifically for the development of grammar. This volume expands on PT's explicit (falsifiable) and universal definition of developmental stages, and proposes (a) fresh interpretations of earlier achievements; (b) explicit treatment of the development of syntax and its interface with discourse-pragmatic motivations and (c) numerous pointers for future studies.Part I of the volume introduces the editors' new approach to the theory. In part II it offers a finer-grained staging of L2 development with reference to three typologically different languages: English, Italian and Japanese. Part III explores languages (Russian, Serbian), issues (Spanish differential object marking, German V2 in declaratives vs questions), populations (L2 in autistic learners), and applications (L2 teaching through CALL) not previously treated in PT.

Book Synopsis First and Second Language Acquisition by : Jürgen M. Meisel

Download or read book First and Second Language Acquisition written by Jürgen M. Meisel. This book was released on 2011-07-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infants and very young children develop almost miraculously the ability of speech, without apparent effort, without even being taught - as opposed to the teenager or the adult struggling without, it seems, ever being able to reach the same level of proficiency as five year olds in their first language. This useful textbook serves as a guide to different types of language acquisition: monolingual and bilingual first language development and child and adult second language acquisition. Unlike other books, it systematically compares first and second language acquisition, drawing on data from several languages. Research questions and findings from various subfields are helpfully summarized to show students how they are related and how they often complement each other. The essential guide to studying first and second language acquisition, it will be used on courses in linguistics, modern languages and developmental psychology.

Book Synopsis Explorations in Second Language Acquisition and Processing by : James Corbet

Download or read book Explorations in Second Language Acquisition and Processing written by James Corbet. This book was released on 2019-03-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents cutting-edge research on the nature of grammatical systems developed by bilinguals and second language learners, as well as how speakers put these grammatical systems to use in processing language. The chapters provide a stimulating mix of theoretical contributions and experimental designs addressing a variety of research questions, such as learnability and access to Universal Grammar, native language influence, variability, and what propels language development from one stage to the next. Bilingual development is a special highlight here. The linguistic domains investigated are also extremely diverse, and include morphology, syntax, and language processing, as well as the interfaces between syntax and semantics and between syntax and discourse. The book covers the acquisition of an impressive number of languages including Arabic, Croatian, Chinese, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish as first or second languages. Through these diverse contributions, the reader will be able to identify and follow important new directions in which generative language acquisition is developing and expanding.
