Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Annual: For the Year of Our Lord, 1922 Words are suggestive and significant things, and they are eternal. "Boys flying kites, can haul in their white-winged birds, but you can't do that when flying words." We shall understand this subject only when we understand the words composing it. Let us take them up one at a time. Our first word is Spiritual. What is spirituality? Is it noise? Is it a sort of mental and soul exhilaration that subordinates reason and order, to confusion and disorder? Is it something that produces trances, hallucinations, and incoherent sounds? The Bible speaks of spiritual mindedness; of spiritual wickedness; of spiritual gifts; of spiritual laws; of spiritual meat; of spiritual drink; of a spiritual rock; of a spiritual body; of a spiritual house; of spiritual blessings; of a spiritual sacrifice; and of other spiritual things, almost ad infinitum, to which we add the Spiritual Aspect of Records and Statistics. To the business man records and statistics have a commercial aspect, for they indicate to him the value of his investments, and the increase of his possessions - and more, they form the basis on which to calculate future investments and sales. Without records and statistics the business man would be as helpless as a ship in a storm, without rudder, compass, and steering wheel. To the professional man, records and statistics have a professional aspect. They indicate to the professional man the lines of activity he has followed, and the alternating success and failure of each of them; and also they suggest to him the ones he is best adapted to follow. It is the habit of some doctors to keep a record of the remedies prescribed for certain diseases, when given to certain patients, and a record of the result at various stages of the disease. This forms a basis for intelligent diagnosis, and successful prognosis, in cases of the same kind, in similar patients. Now I submit that if records and statistics are of such value to men in business and professional life, certainly they have a value to those who serve in the Kingdom of God, and have to do with things eternal. How to introduce the spiritual element into instruction of a formal and external kind was difficult, even for inspiration, but turning to the story of Israel, in the infancy of his life as a nation we find that it was done.
