Book excerpt: From the back cover: Environment is now at the top of the public agenda. This publication...reports on two workshops held in early 1988 to discuss aspects of environmental issues...The workshop members were drawn from number of professions and came with wide experience. They were much concerned about environmental issues and determined to recommend action on them. Accordingly, they refused to be constrained by workshop titles or fixed agendas, and ranged widely over a number of important questions. These included the basic nature of the environmental issue; the apparent failure, over the past couple of decades, of our decision making processes and institutions in attacking the causes - "why have we not done better?" - and the reasons for that; and what now must be done. They ended with a series of recommendations which set out the results of their best thinking at that time.

Book Synopsis Population, Consumption, and the Environment by : Harold Coward

Download or read book Population, Consumption, and the Environment written by Harold Coward. This book was released on 1995-11-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on the different ways in which the major world religions view the problems of overpopulation and excess resource consumption and how they approach possible solutions. After examining the natural background and the human context, the book moves on to consider both religious and secular approaches. It analyzes how a particular religion's scriptures comment on the nature of people, the environment, people's place in the environment, and their roles and responsibilities. The historical dimension is derived from reviewing a particular religion's record in teaching about these issues, often demonstrating how broader issues are addressed. Practical lessons are learned from religious guidelines that deal with current problems and offer solutions. The authors consider Aboriginal spirituality, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Chinese religions. The secular approaches include secular ethics, North-South relations, market forces, the status of women, and international law.
