Book Synopsis The Animal Game by : Daniel E. Bender

Book excerpt: The spread of empires in the nineteenth century brought more than new territories and populations under Western sway. Animals were also swept up in the net of imperialism, as jungles and veldts became colonial ranches and plantations. A booming trade in animals turned many strange and dangerous species into prized commodities. Tigers from India, pythons from Malaya, and gorillas from the Congo found their way—sometimes by shady means—to the zoos of major U.S. cities, where they created a sensation. Zoos were among the most popular attractions in the United States for much of the twentieth century. Stoking the public’s fascination, savvy zookeepers, animal traders, and zoo directors regaled visitors with stories of the fierce behavior of these creatures in their native habitats, as well as daring tales of their capture. Yet as tropical animals became increasingly familiar to the American public, they became ever more rare in the wild. Tracing the history of U.S. zoos and the global trade and trafficking in animals that supplied them, Daniel Bender examines how Americans learned to view faraway places and peoples through the lens of the exotic creatures on display. Over time, as the zoo’s mission shifted from offering entertainment to providing a refuge for endangered species, conservation parks replaced pens and cages. The Animal Game recounts Americans’ ongoing, often conflicted relationship with zoos, decried as anachronistic prisons by animal rights activists even as they remain popular centers of education and preservation.

Book Synopsis The Animal's Game by : Dwayne Kimbrough

Download or read book The Animal's Game written by Dwayne Kimbrough. This book was released on 2023-10-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man is threatened only by fellow man. Great is that threat because man, throughout history, has fought fellow man. All impactful nations of our world fight other nations and must spend enormously because they must be ready to fight. It seems that we cannot outgrow fighting. This book imagines a world in which man does not engage in war. Animals are surrogates, and only animals engage in fighting to the death. Such practice is beneath civilized man, but he is not totally removed. Humans are obsessed with watching animals fight to the death. The animals do not mind. What happens when kids try it? Once the passion for fierce fighting enters the blood, can humans resist the urge to engage in war? Yes, they are superior to animals, but can humans refrain from doing the thing they believed they were too smart to ever do?

Book Synopsis Animals at Play by : Marc Bekoff

Download or read book Animals at Play written by Marc Bekoff. This book was released on 1922. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn from watching animals play? Dogs chase each other and wrestle. Cats pounce and bite. These animals may look like they are fighting, but if you pay close attention— as world-renowned biologist Marc Bekoff does—you can see they are playing and learning the rules of their games. In Animals at Play, Bekoff shows us how animals behave when they play, with full-color illustrations showing animals in action and having fun—from squirrels climbing up a tree to polar bears somersaulting in the snow. Bekoff emphasizes how animals communicate, cooperate and learn to play fair and what happens when they break the rules. He uses lively illustrations and simple explanations of what it means when a sea lion swims with kelp in its mouth or when two dogs bow to each other. Bekoff also describes what happens when animals become too aggressive and how they apologize, forgive and learn to trust one another. This entertaining and informative book will delight every child and show readers how animals—and humans—interact when they are having fun.

Book Synopsis Animal Games by : Gini Scott

Download or read book Animal Games written by Gini Scott. This book was released on 2018-03-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Animal Games were inspired by the Animal Cards that were originally created for the Animal Insights book. This book features a unique way to get insights about yourself and about what you can gain from the qualities of a particular animal. The idea is to think about your associations with that animal and how that can apply to yourself. These same cards can also be used to play a series of fun games, since there are 144 cards, which can easily be combined in various ways to play a variety of classic and new games, such as Animal Poker, Animal Gin, Animal Auction, Animal Concentration, Animal Treasure Hunt, Animal Tales, and more. You can also play team games by dividing up the deck, which is easily divided by 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, 48, or 72. Or pull out certain types of cards, such as all the insects, reptiles, birds, mammals, marine animals or farm animals. The games featured include:- Animal Olympics- Animal Poker- Animal Concentration- Animal Gin- Animal Treasure Hunt- Animal Tales- Animal Fortune Teller- Animal Charades- Save the Animals- What's My Animal?Plus you can create your own animal games. While the animals are listed in alphabetical order, you want to cut out all the Animal Cards, which are printed four to a page, to create a card deck with the picture and name of the animal on one side. Or ideally print out the Animal Cards on card stock and cut those up. You can use the whole deck or selected Animal Cards to play the different games. The cards to use are included with the rules for each game. Once you have cut out all the cards and selected the cards to be used in each game, you can shuffle the cards like a deck of cards or spread them out face down and mix them up on a table top. If the cards are a deck, a dealer can deal them out or you can draw from the deck. Or if the cards are spread out, players can pick cards from the face down deck for themselves or others. The animals selected for Animal Insights come from a list of well-known animals -- from crustaceans, insects, and reptiles to fish, birds, and mammals. Where the animal has many species or breeds, such as a dog or cat, the cards feature several different breeds, and you can choose any species or breed. All of the Animal Cards are in Section I. The games you can play with them are in Section II. If a game calls for using counters or chips to keep score, you can buy these at a game or toy store or get a bag of beans at a grocery store. Another possibility is to use corn chips or potato chips -- just don't eat them! If the game needs a score sheet, you can create one on a sheet of paper. So now, let the games begin!
