These may be called the pri mary constitutional disturbances, to distinguish them from the primary local lesions at the point or points of inoculation. These swellings are caused by a too rapid development Of the glue tissue cells, excited by the active growth among them of the Crypta syphilitica. From its starting-point, this hyperaemia spread rapidly and continuously or appeared in patches here and there, finally, however, becoming universal in a very short space of time or ina few days. As a rule, the extremities were the last to be affected. The mucous membranes Of the mouth and nose participated sometimes in the process, and fissures formed at the corners Of the former; the conjunctivae were usually affected.
