Book Synopsis Taking Space Seriously by : Issachar Rosen-Zvi

Download or read book Taking Space Seriously written by Issachar Rosen-Zvi. This book was released on 2017-10-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This perceptive study investigates the different ways in which the state deals with various social groups through the mechanisms of space. By means of case studies involving three social groups within Israel's multicultural society - the Sephardim, the Bedouin-Arab minority and the ultra-Orthodox community of Jerusalem - the different roles played by political space in legal analysis are revealed and analyzed. Issachar Rosen-Zvi then unearths the unifying logic underlying the disparate legal treatment of political space, brought to light by the case studies. The law treats political space differently depending on the social group involved, an attitude that, the author argues, can be traced back to early Zionist thinking. He concludes that a reform of local government law is required, to correct the segregated system of political space and the separate and unequal distribution of political power and economic resources that accompany it.

In 2017, award-winning author-photographer Nancy Farese visited Bangladesh to photograph the Rohingya refugee crisis, and she saw firsthand the toll of extreme trauma and the most violent tendencies of humankind. She also saw, everywhere, on the edge of every frame, children at play, following their instinctual drive to adapt, socialize, and heal, in defiance of the darker forces all around them. This documentary photography book by Farese focuses on child's play in fourteen countries. Play is where we learn creativity, collaboration, and the emotional flexibility to survive in a chaotic and ambiguous world. She invites us to consider how this universal activity-and the concept of "free play" as a self-motivated and joyful exploration-is threatened by the unrelenting forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting.Potential Space offers a global view of a mundane activity that powerfully shapes who we are both as individuals, and as a society. Play is also where we lose ourselves in time yet find ourselves most fully alive. However, in our modern world free play is under threat, redefined by the converging forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting. Farese looks at children's play through a wide lens, providing a look within, and beyond, the challenges of our time toward a more hopeful and resilient perspective. We know it when we see it, anywhere in the world; the beauty of play is that it becomes both a window and a mirror, providing an opening for empathy, and peace.

Book excerpt: "Like smoke off a collision between Dennis Cooper's George Miles Cycle and Beyond The Black Rainbow, absorbing the energy of mind control, reincarnation, parallel universes, altered states, school shootings, obsession, suicidal ideation, and so much else, B.R. Yeager's multi-valent voicing of drugged up, occult youth reveals fresh tunnels into the gray space between the body and the spirit, the living and the dead, providing a well-aimed shot in the arm for the world of conceptual contemporary horror." -Blake Butler, author of Three Hundred Million "Ever wonder where teenage children go at night? Perhaps it's best not knowing the answer. There's something amiss in Kinsfield, a drab, boring city much like your own, except for the teenage suicide epidemic, stagnant, ineffectual parents, cultish behavior that borders on psychosis, and strings, strings everywhere. B.R. Yeager's Negative Space is a hypnotic collage of message boards, memes, and ruined bodies twisting at the end of a rope. Most modern novels have lost all concept of magic. B.R. Yeager's Negative Space is a stunning refutation of the quotidian." -James Nulick, author of Haunted Girlfriend & Valencia

Book Synopsis Silence and Voice in the Study of Contentious Politics by : Ronald Aminzade

Download or read book Silence and Voice in the Study of Contentious Politics written by Ronald Aminzade. This book was released on 2001-09-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to highlight and begin to give 'voice' to some of the notable 'silences' evident in recent years in the study of contentious politics. The seven co-authors take up seven specific topics in the volume: the relationship between emotions and contention; temporality in the study of contention; the spatial dimensions of contention; leadership in contention; the role of threat in contention; religion and contention; and contention in the context of demographic and life-course processes. The seven spent three years involved in an ongoing project designed to take stock, and attempt a partial synthesis, of various literatures that have grown up around the study of non-routine or contentious politics. As such, it is likely to be viewed as a groundbreaking volume that not only undermines conventional disciplinary understanding of contentious politics, but also lays out a number of provocative new research agendas.
