Book Synopsis Tailoring Surfaces by : Nicholas D. Spencer

Download or read book Tailoring Surfaces written by Nicholas D. Spencer. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the book is the modification of surfaces to tailor them for a specific purpose. Using this method of surface modification, materials chosen for their bulk properties (tensile strength, temperature stability, density, price can be optimized for any particular application, which can lead to improved hardness, biological inertness or activity, corrosion resistance, low or high friction or adhesion, water repellency or wettability, or catalytic activity. The works of the author — many of his crucial papers are included — touches upon these surface properties and spans fields including catalysis, analytical surface science, self-assembled monolayers, tribology, biomaterials, superhydrophobicity and polymer coatings.

Book Synopsis Studies on Porous Monolithic Materials Prepared via Sol–Gel Processes by : George Hasegawa

Download or read book Studies on Porous Monolithic Materials Prepared via Sol–Gel Processes written by George Hasegawa. This book was released on 2012-10-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on porous monolithic materials that are not in the forms of particles, fibers, or films. In particular, the synthetic strategy of porous monolithic materials via the sol–gel method accompanied by phase separation, which is characterized as the non-templating method for tailoring well-defined macropores, is described from the basics to actual synthesis. Porous materials are attracting more and more attention in various fields such as electronics, energy storage, catalysis, sensing, adsorbents, biomedical science, and separation science. To date, many efforts have been made to synthesize porous materials in various chemical compositions—organics, inorganics including metals, glasses and ceramics, and organic-inorganic hybrids. Also demonstrated in this thesis are the potential applications of synthesized porous monolithic materials to separation media as well as to electrodes for electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and Li-ion batteries (LIBs). This work is ideal for graduate students in materials science and is also useful to engineers or scientists seeking basic knowledge of porous monolithic materials.

Book Synopsis Ice Templating and Freeze-Drying for Porous Materials and Their Applications by : Haifei Zhang

Download or read book Ice Templating and Freeze-Drying for Porous Materials and Their Applications written by Haifei Zhang. This book was released on 2018-05-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a gap in the literature, this is the first book to focus on the fabrication of functional porous materials by using ice templating and freeze drying. Comprehensive in its scope, the volume covers such techniques as the fabrication of porous polymers, porous ceramics, biomimic strong composites, carbon nanostructured materials, nanomedicine, porous nanostructures by freeze drying of colloidal or nanoparticle suspensions, and porous materials by combining ice templating and other techniques. In addition, applications for each type of material are also discussed. Of great benefit to those working in the freeze-drying field and researchers in porous materials, materials chemistry, engineering, and the use of such materials for various applications, both in academia and industry.
