Book Synopsis Symplasmic Transport in Vascular Plants by : Katarzyna Sokołowska

Download or read book Symplasmic Transport in Vascular Plants written by Katarzyna Sokołowska. This book was released on 2013-07-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrates on symplasmic transport of small molecules, although the cell-to-cell transport of macromolecules will also be discussed. This book characterize the efficiency of symplasmic transport, mechanisms of molecule passage via plasmodesmata, and the external and internal factors that regulate plasmodesmatal conductivity. In this context, the book focused on the role of symplasmic domains in plant development, as well as the influence of environmental stresses on the plasmodesmata. Besides cell-to-cell symplasmic transport, the significance of long-distance symplasmic transport of solutes in phloem elements is also reviewed. Symplasmic Transport in Vascular Plants presents the mechanism of phloem transport, the processes of symplasmic loading and unloading, as well as the role of pre- and post-phloem transport, with special attention paid to symplasmic transport in wood. Finally, the relevance of the spread of both macromolecules and viruses, via plasmodesmata, is presented.

Download or read book Vascular Transport in Plants written by N. Michelle Holbrook. This book was released on 2011-09-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vascular Transport in Plants provides an up-to-date synthesis of new research on the biology of long distance transport processes in plants. It is a valuable resource and reference for researchers and graduate level students in physiology, molecular biology, physiology, ecology, ecological physiology, development, and all applied disciplines related to agriculture, horticulture, forestry and biotechnology. The book considers long-distance transport from the perspective of molecular level processes to whole plant function, allowing readers to integrate information relating to vascular transport across multiple scales. The book is unique in presenting xylem and phloem transport processes in plants together in a comparative style that emphasizes the important interactions between these two parallel transport systems. - Includes 105 exceptional figures - Discusses xylem and phloem transport in a single volume, highlighting their interactions - Syntheses of structure, function and biology of vascular transport by leading authorities - Poses unsolved questions and stimulates future research - Provides a new conceptual framework for vascular function in plants

Book Synopsis Transport and Transfer Process in Plants by : I Wardlaw

Download or read book Transport and Transfer Process in Plants written by I Wardlaw. This book was released on 2012-12-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport and Transfer Processes in Plants presents the proceedings of a symposium held in Canberra, Australia, in December 1975 under the auspices of the U.S.-Australia Agreement for Scientific and Technical Cooperation. It explores how organic materials and nutrients are distributed in plants and how plants are influenced by the interactions between various forms of both long- and short-distance transport. The book also considers how environmental factors regulate plant growth, how nutrients may be used in a more efficient manner, and how plants acquire disease. Divided into three parts encompassing 39 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the mechanisms underlying transport and distribution in plants; the effect of phloem capacity on plant growth and development; and short-distance transfer. It then introduces the reader to plasmodesmata and symplastic transport; how flow affects solute transport in plants; cytoplasmic streaming in characean algae; occurrence and function of transfer cells; movement of solutes from host to parasite in nematode infected roots; and nutrient uptake by roots and transport to the xylem. The book also discusses symplasmic transport and ion release to the xylem; regulation of nutrient uptake by cells and roots; transfer of ions and products of photosynthesis to guard cells; and vascular patterns in higher plants. It considers histochemical approaches to water-soluble compounds and their use in addressing problems of translocation; long-distance movement of tobacco mosaic virus in Nicotiana glutinosa; the influence of stomatal behavior on long-distance transport; and water transport through plants. This book will be a valuable resource for scientists, students, and researchers.

Book Synopsis Transport in Plants II by : U. Lüttge

Download or read book Transport in Plants II written by U. Lüttge. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part (Part A) of this volume on transport, there was an emphasis on the processes occurring at the membranes bounding the cells. It was convenient to distinguish active and passive processes of transport across the membranes, and to recognize that certain transport processes may be regulated by internal factors in the cells such as cytoplasmic pH, concentrations of ions, of malate or of sugar in the vacuoles, or the hydrostatic pressure. Cells in tissues and organs show the same kinds of properties as individual cells, but in addition there can be cell to cell transport related to the organization of the tissue. Firstly cells within a tissue are separated from the external solutions by a diffusion path comprising parts of the cell walls and intercellular spaces; more generally this extra-cytoplasmic part of the tissue has been called the apoplasm. A similar term is "free space". Secondly, the anatomy of cells in tissues seems to allow some facilitated, local transport between cells in a symplasm. Entry into the symplast and subsequent transport in a symplasmic continuum seems to be privileged, in that ions may not have to mix with the bulk of the cytoplasm and can pass from cell to cell in particular cytoplasmic structures, plasmodesmata. In Chara plants, this kind of transport is found operating across the multi-cellular nodes as the main means of transport between the long internodal cells.

Book Synopsis Transport of Photoassimilates by : D. A. Baker

Download or read book Transport of Photoassimilates written by D. A. Baker. This book was released on 1989. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight invited papers review the major recent developments in the study of the movement of photoassimilates within the higher plants. The major events of the entire migration from the chloroplast of the photosynthetic cell to the sink organ are covered. The chapters discuss transport within photosynthetic cells and between leaf cells; the structure of phloem; the origin, destination, and fate of phloem solutes; the loading and unloading of photoassimilates, the physiological aspects of translation, and the relationship and regulation between source and sink organs. Includes an appendix of tables showing the physico-chemical aspects of phloem sap. Intended for postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students.
