Book excerpt: Sandra Stevens's parents wanted their daughter to attend private Catholic schools they could not afford so her mother and father cooked up a scheme. They would buy a motel called The Morocco and rent rooms by the hour in order to pay their child's tuition. The unwholesome effects such an environment can have on a child - who, as an adult, would eventually succumb to the siren call of easy money - is the subject of Surviving Sexploitation: The World’s Shortest Memoir. With a ‘Prostitutes Are People Too!’ message, Ms. Stevens offers a story of recovery, hope, and, ultimately, survival. We all have stories to tell. No matter how challenging the start, Sandra Stevens encourages all survivors of child abuse to let their voices rise above the din.

Book Synopsis Surviving Sexual Violence by : Liz Kelly

Download or read book Surviving Sexual Violence written by Liz Kelly. This book was released on 2013-04-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's awareness of the threat and reality of sexual violence is now perhaps more than ever publicly acknowledged. Yet this fact continues to be almost wholly ignored. This new study, based on in-depth interviews with 60 women, is the first to cover the experience of a range of forms of sexual violence over women's lifetimes. Drawing on feminist theory, developing a critique of male research and quoting extensively from the women interviewed, it developes feminist thought in several key areas: the similarities and differences between forms of sexual violence; the ways women define their experiences; and the strategies women use in resisting, coping with and surviving sexual violence. The author stresses the importance for all women of recognizing the incidents of sexual violence in their lives and seeing themselves and other women as survivors rather than victims. In highlighting the ways in which the media, the criminal justice system and even the "helping" profess ions contribute to the trivialization of sexual violence, she demonstrates the necessity of women organizing collectively to end this suffering.

Book Synopsis Beyond Surviving by : Rachel Grant

Download or read book Beyond Surviving written by Rachel Grant. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of recovery, there has been a shift from using the word victim to survivor when describing those who have been abused. This new label conveys strength to empower and to embolden you as you begin the journey of recovery. While moving from victim to survivor is an important step in the healing process, it does not go far enough in framing an identity that leads to letting go of the pain of abuse and finally feeling normal. In Beyond Surviving, author Rachel Grant, a sexual abuse recovery coach, provides an understanding of the three stages of recovery victim, survivor, and beyond surviving and offers survivors guidance and tools for reaching the third stage of recovery. Based on cognitive behavioral techniques, neurological science, the power of language to heal, and Grant's personal journey, Beyond Surviving teaches you how to actively challenge and break the patterns of thought and behavior that result from sexual abuse. It explores how different areas of life are impacted by abuse and communicates valuable skills for gaining a new perspective that inspires action and change. It provides an opportunity to reflect and practice these new skills through exercises and assignments. Beyond Surviving enables survivors of sexual abuse to take back their rights and realize their own ability to make powerful choices about who they are and how they live. This guidebook offers an opportunity to reach the final stage of recovery and begin living authentically and free from the burdens of past experiences.

Book Synopsis Sexploitation by : Michèle Alexandre

Download or read book Sexploitation written by Michèle Alexandre. This book was released on 2014-12-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michèle Alexandre’s innovative study examines how sexual profiling represses, oppresses, and hinders various aspects of life for both genders, and explores the ways in which the law and the community can help eradicate the practice of sexual profiling. Alexandre defines "sexploitation" as the perpetuation of myths and stereotypical notions regarding men and women in order to further an agenda of oppression and subordination in certain spheres of society. The most popular means through which this sexploitation is achieved is through a method Alexandre coins as "sexual profiling." She argues that sexual profiling ultimately stifles the growth of our society by creating inefficient as well as oppressive systems, and that its eradication can help increase the productivity as well as the morale of society. Alexandre opens the book by exploring in detail the various ways in which normative views of gender are constructed and perpetuated through media and societal norms. She then focuses on the ways in which recent legal opinions and developments contribute to perpetuate these restrictive and oppressive norms. Finally, Alexandre outlines a plan to help eliminate the presence of these destructive norms and attitudes from different sectors of society.
