Chapters investigate the underlying and often overlooked connections that link rising rates and disproportionate concentrations of suicide within specific populations to wider social, political, and economic conditions. Book Synopsis Suicide by : Danuta Wasserman

Download or read book Suicide written by Danuta Wasserman. This book was released on 2016-01-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately one million people worldwide commit suicide each year, and at least ten times as many attempt suicide. A considerable number of these people are in contact with members of the healthcare sector, and encounters with suicidal individuals form a common part of the everyday work of many healthcare professionals. Suicide: An unnecessary death examines the pharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and psychosocial measures adopted by psychiatrists, GPs, and other health-care staff, and emphasizes the need for a clearer psychodynamic understanding of the self if patients are to be successfully recognized, diagnosed, and treated. Drawing on the latest research by leading international experts in the field of suicidology, this new edition provides clinicians with an accessible summary of the latest research into suicide and its prevention. The abundance of new literature can make it difficult for those whose clinical practice involves daily contact with suicidal patients to devote sufficient time to penetrating the research and, accordingly, apply new findings in their clinical practice. In light of the WHO Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020, this new edition is a timely contribution to the field, and a vital and rapid overview, that will increase awareness of suicide prevention methods.

Book Synopsis Critical Suicidology by : Jennifer White

Download or read book Critical Suicidology written by Jennifer White. This book was released on 2015-12-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, suicides account for a significant number of premature deaths every year. Traditional approaches to suicide research and prevention are not working for everyone, but why is this? And what can be done about it? In Critical Suicidology, a team of international scholars, practitioners, and people directly affected by suicide argue that the field of suicidology has become too focused on the biomedical paradigm: a model that pathologizes distress and obscures the social, political, and historical contexts that contribute to human suffering. The authors introduce the perspectives of those who have direct personal knowledge of suicide and suicidal behaviour and propose alternative approaches to suicide prevention that are creative, socially just, and culturally responsive. In the right hands, this book could save lives.

Book Synopsis Examining a Suicide Prevention Curriculum Using a Social Justice Framework by : Alyssa G. Ayon

Download or read book Examining a Suicide Prevention Curriculum Using a Social Justice Framework written by Alyssa G. Ayon. This book was released on 2022. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for youth ages 15-24 and in California, one in five students contemplate suicide (Westefeld, 2020; Yarbrough, 2019). This paper critically analyzes the suicide prevention curriculum Erika's Lighthouse, using a social justice framework outlined by Hochhauser et al. (2020). Erika's Lighthouse (ELH) is the universally implemented suicide prevention curriculum across Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest district in the country. The need to develop comprehensive suicide prevention programs and curriculums in schools is evident. More specifically, suicidology is beginning to frame suicide as an issue of social justice, opposed to an individual problem. As research grows on the link between suicide prevention and social justice issues, results of this paper indicate Erika's Lighthouse does not sufficiently incorporate ideas of social justice into the curriculum. Recommendations for implementation of a social justice framework are discussed. Considering the expansive geographic area and diverse communities LAUSD covers, ELH should address unique issues faced by district students and families. The implications for social work in preventing suicide from a social justice approach is briefly examined, as we work in various institutions and can take multiple roles in preventing suicide.
