Book excerpt: This practical guide describes ways of working with learners diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by using Multiple Intelligences Theory. Written for all educators as well as parents, it examines curricular, instructional, school partnering, and leadership issues that may arise for these students in grades K8. Supported by real-life examples, it presents constructive strategies to help teachers work with ADHD students in ways that honor their strengths and allow for meaningful inclusion in the general education classroom. As viewed through the lens of an MI curriculum, ADHD is not a disadvantage; it is an integral component of the way a student processes information and makes sense of the world.

Book Synopsis Understanding by Design by : Grant P. Wiggins

Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins. This book was released on 2005. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book Synopsis Strategic Planning for Teachers by : Valerie M. White

Download or read book Strategic Planning for Teachers written by Valerie M. White. This book was released on 2020. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research case study presented aims to determine the extent teachers can use strategic planning methods to improve and better advocate for their arts program. Teachers may feel more empowered by their educational leaders if given quality time to collaborate with their arts department so that students may utilize the benefits and increased opportunities having the arts in their daily schedules could give them. The case study takes place at a comprehensive Southern California high school with an existing arts program. The focus is on empowering and supporting teachers. This study utilized mixed methods, including quantitative survey data and qualitative interviews with the arts teachers employed at Sierra High School (a pseudonym) and the principal. Data summarizes teachers' attitudes about the goals, process, and purpose, collaboration with colleagues, community partnerships, and the strategic planning process. Direct quotations from teachers and the principal are woven into the narrative. Strategic planning may prove beneficial for school staff willing to collaborate and leadership to invest in their teachers. A few significant implications for this study include methods and rationales for California schools to partake in similar strategic planning processes. This study may be useful to other researchers looking to include long-term results of the implementation of a strategic plan, such as more comprehensive data on increased student achievement.
