Book excerpt: Missing Trader Intra-Community Fraud (also known as carousel fraud), where goods are repeatedly exported and imported with the EU, has caused a considerable loss of revenue In 2005/6 it is estimated the UK lost between £3-4.5 billion. This report looks both at some of the measure that have been taken to recoup some of this money and measures to stop fraud occurring. In addition it considers whether the Government's policies have imposed an unreasonable burden upon legitimate businesses within affected sectors. It concludes that not only are existing measures unsustainable, steps need to be taken to ensure innocent traders are not damaged. The government needs to work with Member States to implement a system of taxation of intra-Community transactions that will be less vulnerable to major fraud.

Book Synopsis Sicilian Carousel by : Lawrence Durrell

Download or read book Sicilian Carousel written by Lawrence Durrell. This book was released on 2012-06-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving account of friendship and discovery on the island of Sicily from the acclaimed travel writer and bestselling author of The Alexandria Quartet. Despite decades spent writing poetic evocations of the timeless pleasures of life in the Mediterranean, Lawrence Durrell had never set foot on the sea’s largest island: mysterious, impenetrable Sicily. For years his friend Martine begged him to visit her on this sun-kissed paradise, and though he always intended to, life inevitably interfered. It took Martine’s sudden death to finally bring him to the island’s shores. With Martine’s letters in his pocket, Durrell signs up for a tour group, hoping to learn the travel habits of those who aren’t obsessively devoted to island life. As he treks from sight to sight, dizzy with history and culture, Durrell finds echoes of his past lives in Rhodes, Cyprus, and Corfu.

Clarke’s restaurant and the old Penn Station; the inventions of the birth control pill, the Xerox machine, and the Apollo Lunar Module; the release of the Beatles’ Revolver and the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds; and all the wars, protests, assassinations, and murders that cast a bloody pall over a chaotic decade. Mad Men Carousel is named after an iconic moment from the show’s first-season finale, “The Wheel,â€? wherein Don delivers an unforgettable pitch for a new slide projector that’s centered on the idea of nostalgia: “the pain from an old wound.â€? Book excerpt: Michael Morpurgo's The Day the World Stopped Turning is a middle-grade novel about an extraordinary boy who sees the world differently. In the unique landscape of the Camargue (France) during World War II, Lorenzo lives among the salt flats and the flamingos. There are lots of things he doesn't understand–but he does know how to heal animals, how to talk to them; the flamingos especially. He loves routine, and music too: and every week he goes to market with his mother. It’s there he meets Kezia, a Roma girl, who helps her parents run their carousel–and who shows him how to ride the wooden horse as the music plays. But then the German soldiers come, with their guns. Everything is threatened, everything is falling apart: the carousel, Kezia and her family, even Lorenzo’s beloved flamingos. Yet there are kind people even among soldiers, and there is always hope. . .
