Download or read book Status and Future of Microwave Cavity Axion Searches written by . This book was released on 1999. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review the status of an ongoing large-scale search for axions which may constitute the dark matter of our Milky Way halo. The experiment is based on the microwave cavity technique proposed by Sikivie, and marks a ''second-generation'' to the original experiments performed by the Rochester-Brookhaven-Fermilab collaboration, and the University of Florida group. Sensitivity to galactic asions has been achieved, at least for one important model coupling. A remarkable breakthrough in making near-quantum Limited dc SQUID amplifiers in the several hundred megahertz range has provided the enabling technology for a major upgrade of this effort. By improving the noise temperature by more than an order of magnitude, a much more sensitive search may be carried out, greatly improving the prospects for discovering the asion.

Book Synopsis Microwave Cavities and Detectors for Axion Research by : Gianpaolo Carosi

Download or read book Microwave Cavities and Detectors for Axion Research written by Gianpaolo Carosi. This book was released on 2020-07-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of dark matter remains one of the preeminent mysteries in physics and cosmology. It appears to require the existence of new particles whose interactions with ordinary matter are extraordinarily feeble. One well-motivated candidate is the axion, an extraordinarily light neutral particle that may possibly be detected by looking for their conversion to detectable microwaves in the presence of a strong magnetic field. This has led to a number of experimental searches that are beginning to probe plausible axion model space and may reveal the axion in the near future. These proceedings discuss the challenges of designing and operating tunable resonant cavities and detectors at ultralow temperatures. The topics discussed here have potential application far beyond the field of dark matter detection and may be applied to resonant cavities for accelerators as well as designing superconducting detectors for quantum information and computing applications. This work is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in learning the unique requirements for designing and operating microwave cavities and detectors for direct axion searches and to introduce several proposed experimental concepts that are still in the prototype stage.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter by : Neil John Curwen Spooner

Download or read book Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter written by Neil John Curwen Spooner. This book was released on 2003. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains written versions of the presentations made at the 4th International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter (IDM 2002), held in York, UK, in September 2002. The objective of this workshop series is to assess the status of work attempting to identify what constitutes dark matter OCo in particular, to consider the techniques being used, how successful they are, and what new techniques are likely to improve prospects for identifying likely dark matter candidates in the future. At IDM 2002 special emphasis was placed on recent results obtained in searches for baryonic and non-baryonic dark matter. The proceedings include reviews of major topics on dark matter, as well as short contributed talks."
