Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At nanoscale, the dispersion of particles in either organic or aqueous solution is a huge challenge. In recent years, many attempts have been made to stabilize nanoparticles with dispersant. The use of dispersant, however, may cause unwanted properties change on the dispersion applications. In this research, the dispersion behavior of metal oxide nanowires in the absence of dispersant is studied and compared with that of spherical shaped counterparts. A simple technique involving the use of ultrasonication is used to disperse nanoparticles and nanowires in both aqueous and organic solvents. The stabilities of the dispersions are then examined using of particle size distribution, agglomeration pattern, sedimentation rate, zeta potential measurement, and fractal dimension analyses. Theoretical calculations are performed. The experimental results show that metal oxide nanowires disperse readily into either organic or aqueous solvents than that of spherical shaped nanoparticles. In addition, preliminary results of this research indicate that nanowires at extremely small loadings could improve mechanical properties of thin films. This study makes a contribution to our understanding of shape effect on the dispersion of nanomaterials. The stability of metal oxide nanowires in solvent in a significant quantity is studied for the first time.

Book Synopsis Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents by : Markus Niederberger

Download or read book Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents written by Markus Niederberger. This book was released on 2009-09-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents discusses recent advances in the chemistry involved for the controlled synthesis and assembly of metal oxide nanoparticles, the characterizations required by such nanoobjects, and their size and shape depending properties. In the last few years, a valuable alternative to the well-known aqueous sol-gel processes was developed in the form of nonaqueous solution routes. Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Organic Solvents reviews and compares surfactant- and solvent-controlled routes, as well as providing an overview of techniques for the characterization of metal oxide nanoparticles, crystallization pathways, the physical properties of metal oxide nanoparticles, their applications in diverse fields of technology, and their assembly into larger nano- and mesostructures. Researchers and postgraduates in the fields of nanomaterials and sol-gel chemistry will appreciate this book’s informative approach to chemical formation mechanisms in relation to metal oxides.
